Inventory of production materials

Container List

Series I. Video recordings 1996-1998 (approximately 138 film reels; 356 videotapes; and 17 DVD videodiscs)
Materials comprise film, videotape, and DVDs, dating 1996-1998, generated by the Getty film project Art Works: Behind the Scenes at the Getty. The final edit is a 28-minute promotional film created to highlight the activities of the five programs of the Trust that were active during the time leading up to the opening of the Getty Center in 1997: the Getty Conservation Institute, Getty Grant Program, Getty Information Institute, Getty Education Institute, and Getty Museum. Footage includes restoration efforts related to cultural heritage sites such as the Magao Grottoes, the Baltit Fortress, and the Bonampak murals; landmarks in Los Angeles, Paris, and Mexico City; a dramatisation of the recovery of cultural property in the Czech Republic; classroom scenes of art education in Southern California; and the newly-opened Getty Center facility and staff.

Materials comprise derivatives of the final edit (final cut) of the film Art Works: Behind the Scenes at the Getty in a variety of formats (videotapes and DVDs). The final edit is open to the public and is available online.

Materials comprise the original footage captured during the film shoots related to the production of Art Works: Behind the Scenes at the Getty. Derivatives of the footage exist in a variety of formats (videotapes and DVDs) that were created over a period of several years, but the original footage (film) appears to have been shot in 1996 and 1997.

Series I.C.1. Chiapas, Mexico: Bonampak Murals, 1996-1997 (12 film reels and 10 videotapes)
Film captures footage of the Bonampak Murals in the rainforest of Chiapas, Mexico and conversation with art historian Mary Ellen Miller regarding the study and reconstruction of these ancient Mayan frescos. The Bonampak Documentation Project was largely supported by the Getty Grant Program (predecessor of the Getty Foundation) with the permission and logistical assistance of the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia in Mexico.

Footage captures scenes from Prague and the Village of Karlovy Vary Police Department to demonstrate real-world application of the standards that emerged from the Getty Information Institute's "Object I.D. Project." First Lieutenant Ladislav Kosnar shows how documenting images and descriptions of objects in a database can aid in their recovery if they are stolen. Footage also includes a dramatisation of theft and recovery of a religious statue.

Footage includes conversations with the Getty's partners in conservation: Mrs. Fan Jinshi, Deputy Director, Dunhuang Academy, and Mr. Li Shi, Deputy Director of the Conservation Institute at Dunhuang Academy.

Footage captures sites throughout the Los Angeles area that were part of the Getty Conservation Institute's "Landmarks of L.A. Project" and computer screens displaying the Getty Information Institute's "Los Angles Culture Net Project." The "L.A. Culture Net Project" was cutting edge at the time and sought to virtually link cultural resources from around Los Angeles and spark an electronic dialogue among the artists and cultural institutions of the community.
The "Landmarks of L.A. Project" during which the Conservation Institute asked "youths of diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds . . . to photograph personal landmarks as well as designated heritage sites and to comment on the landmarks' relevance to their own and other people's lives . . . The campaign's underlying premise is that if people come face-to-face with their landmarks and if they see the built landscape as an extension of their cultural history and its outstanding features as an embodiment of their personal and social identities, they will develop a sense of caring for it. These feelings, in turn, will help prevent landmarks from being neglected or abused."

Materials comprise the electronic and paper records generated during the production of the video Art Works: Behind the Scenes at the Getty. Records document the work completed by the production companies OneSuch Films and Mountainair Films, Inc. and also the work completed by the film editing company, Two Headed Monster. Documentation includes contracts, releases, logs of dailies, camera reports, lab reports, inventories, story boards, scripts, presentation transparencies, correspondence, and background information on projects and locations.
The records date from 1995 to 1998 and appear to be a compilation of files maintained by different people; some of the content overlaps.
Arrangement
Material was largely left in its original order.
The following types of records are permanently closed: records containing personal information, records that compromise security or operations, legal communications, legal work product, and records related to donors. The J. Paul Getty Trust reserves the right to restrict access to any records held by the Institutional Archives.
Records that are closed/restricted are noted at the folder level and have been physically separated from the rest of the collection.
