Series VII. Pope-Hennessy family papers, 1617-1995
41 Linear
Feet
(75 boxes, 1 flatfile
folder)
|
The family papers form a large portion of the archive and document Pope-Hennessy's
family, including his father, Ladislas Herbert Richard Pope-Hennessy (1875-1942), his
mother, Dame Una Constance (née Birch) Pope-Hennessy (1876-1949), his brother, James
Pope-Hennessy (1916-1974), and his grandfather, Sir John Pope-Hennessy (1834-1891).
Included are family letters, mostly from Una and James, revealing their intellectual
relationship with Pope-Hennessy. This section also includes manuscripts of published and
unpublished works by his mother and brother. Another notable part of this section is
correspondence from members of their social circle including Bertrand Russell, Logan
Pearsall Smith, and Cecil Beaton. Additionally, Ladilas's papers contain material
related to his military work as major-general as well as his political involvement with
the Irish Dominion. A small number of papers belonging to Pope-Hennessy's grandfather
also concern political matters and his colonial service as governor. Other family papers
include clippings, notes, and personal items such as birth certificates, agendas, and
passports.
