The files in Series IV contain papers from Pope-Hennessy's position as director of the
Victoria and Albert Museum from 1967-1973 and of the British Museum from 1974-1976; and
as Consultative Chairman of the Department of European Paintings at the Metropolitan
Museum of Art and art history professor at New York University's Institute of Fine Arts
from 1977-1986. The majority of the files contain correspondence with major museums in
Europe and North America, art historians, dealers, and auction houses. Some folders
include copies of responses from Pope-Hennessy, as well as photographs, ephemera, notes,
and clippings.
Arrangement note
Files for both the Victoria and Albert Museum and British Museum were originally
combined together. Pope-Hennessy's teaching files for the Institute of Fine Arts are
filed under the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Original alphabetical order has been retained. Files were arranged alphabetically by
geographical location or by name of person, institution, gallery, organization, or
publication.
Victoria and Albert Museum and British Museum, 1946-1978
Original order has been retained, with files from both institutions combined.
