Series I. Postcards, ca. 1900-ca. 1957 2,291 postcards
Series I contains a wide range of images of people, places, events and activities pertaining to the former French colonies of Africa, to the French military, and to the colonial expositions held in France. The series features postcards from a multitude of publishers, based in cities throughout France and its colonies; most predominantly represented are Editions artistiques ADIA, Nice; Braun et compagnie, Paris; CAP (Compagnie alsacienne des arts photomécaniques), Strasbourg; La Cigogne, Algiers and Casablanca; CIM (Combier imprimeur Mâcon); Collection idéale PS; Flandrin, Casablanca; Fortier, Dakar; J. [Jean] Geiser, Algiers; Edition Jomone, Algiers; LL (Lévy, fils et compagnie), Paris ; ND (Neurdein frères), Paris; and Lévy et Neurdein réunis, Paris. Many of the postcards have been used for correspondence, almost universally in French, at times with insights into the subjects depicted on the postcards as well as into the lives of colonists. Cross-reference cards have been included at the ends of certain files, to assist the researcher in locating related images.
