Scope and Content of Collection
Views of the waterfront and docks predominate in this collection of 16 albumen prints by an
unidentified photographer documenting the northern Brazilian port city of Belém (then known
as Pará), center of the Amazonian rubber boom in the late 19th century. Other images show
buildings (Teatro da Paz, Portuguese hospital, commercial bank, convent, bathhouse) and
street views (Rua do Imperador, Rua do Conselheiro).
Photographs are mounted recto and verso on eight sheets. The former name of the city, Pará,
is written on all of the mounts below the images, in eight instances with additional
description. These captions have been used as image titles. Titles for the remaining eight
images are devised.
