The correspondence is both personal and professional. It contains ca. 240 love letters in French between the painter Mariette
Lydis and Bontempelli (1925-1928) and 15 linear in. of correspondence between Bontempelli and Paola Masino (1928-1953), organized
chronologically. The sometimes daily letter exchanges between these two writers, companions for thirty-two years, is especially
rich, containing critiques of their respective writings and ample evidence of their enduring passion for each other. Correspondence
with other friends and associates occupies 20 linear in. and is organized alphabetically. Correspondents include Pirandello
(6), G.A. Borgese (10), Cecchi (10), A. Graf (12), Malpiero (58), Ada Negri (6), Ugo Ojetti (40), Anna Maria Ortese (25),
Jovine Livio Stanis (56) and many other writers, editors, and prominent mid-20th century figures. Correspondence with publishing
houses (5 linear in.) and periodicals (5 linear in.) also features letters from influential figures with whom Bontempelli
was closely associated, including Arnoldo and Alberto Mondadori, Nino Frank, and Malaparte. Correspondence concerning the
right to translate, anthologize or cite from Bontempelli's work (1.5 linear ft.) demonstrates the extent of Bontempelli's
success, as does the correspondence regarding payment (5 linear in.). Correspondence from readers of "Colloqui" in Tempo occupies
1.25 linear ft. Correspondence pulled from clippings and not yet interfiled is stored in Series IV Clippings.
General note
[Numbers in parentheses refer to approximate number of items in folder. Please note that correspondence between Bontempelli's
parents, Maria Cislaghi and Alfonso Bontempelli, and other correspondence relating to them, is filed in Series III (Personal).
Correspondence pulled from clippings is presently stored in Box 60.]

Correspondence from readers of Bontempelli's column "Colloqui" in
Tempo, ca. 1943-1947
Bontempelli's manuscripts are organized by genre, within which category they are organized either chronologically or alphabetically.
They include handwritten and/or corrected typewritten drafts of four novels,
Il figlio di due madri,
Vita e morte di Adria e dei suoi figli,
Gente nel tempo, and
La famiglia di fabbro, a partial draft of 522, and selections from four different short story collections, including
L'amante fedele. All major plays are present in handwritten and/or corrected typewritten drafts, with the exception of
Guardia all luna. Several pre-1920 refuted plays are also present. There are also a few movie treatments and screenplay drafts.
Among the essays and lectures are numerous drafts of essays on Novecentismo, including handwritten essays from the first two
issues of
'900. The essays and lectures on Italian history and literature eventually collected in
Introduzioni e discorsi (
1945) are present in handwritten and/or corrected typewritten drafts, and in the completed book manuscript. There are also handwritten
drafts of
Antologia della lirica italiana (pub.
Lirica Italiana,
1944) translations of the Bible, Stendahl, Moliere and others. There are numerous musical scores by Bontempelli in draft and printed
form, several of which were written for plays in the collection, and drafts of Bontempelli's essays on music, collected under
the title
Critici musicali (pub.
Passione incompiuta,
1958). There are drafts and notes of the idearium
Bianco e nero (1.25 linear ft.), an abbreviated version of which was published in
1987.
