8-9 Notebooks, 1945-1987
The notebooks, almost all handwritten, represent a genre distinctly different from the journals of Claude Fredericks (in collection 900230C) and rarely narrate actual events or responses to those events. The early notebooks (1945-1962) consist by and large of ideas for stories and plays, the later notebooks (1962-1987) increasingly consist of ideas that develop certain philosophical, psychological, and religious concerns central to Fredericks's thought but also continue to contain ideas for stories and plays. The seeds of many of the ideas that motivated Fredericks's teaching at Bennington are found here. A section from the notebook written in 1975 was published in 1979 in Parenthèse (Volume 2, Numbers 3 & 4).

[Negatives in envelopes 22 through 32 do not always match the sequence of the numbered prints in this collection and seem in some cases to be missing. This is because Yoshihiro Yoshida took some of the negatives to Japan with him when he returned from America in July 1967 and returned them, or some of them, only after he had had prints of his own made. Some of Claude Fredericks's prints, too, were burned by Yoshihiro Yoshida while he was in America. The present prints of the negatives in envelopes 22 through 32 were made in 1978, when Claude Fredericks began to bring order to this collection.]

Series IV.C. Photographic postcards from Carl Van Vechten, 1947-1950 121 items
Van Vechten sent Claude Fredericks and Milton Saul postcards made from his own photographs between 1947-1950. They measure 3 ½ in. by 5 ¼ in. and most are embossed "Photograph by Carl Van Vechten." The images are of artists actors, authors, dancers, musicians and composers. Some include lengthy messages.
The following inventory is only a partial list since not all the persons have been identified. A few of the postcards are not Van Vechten photographs but only postcards written by him. Where it has been discovered that the photographs have been published, this fact is noted. Dance Photography refers to Dance Photography of Carl Van Vechten (New York-London 1981), and Portraits refers to Portraits: The Photography of Carl Van Vechten (Indianapolis-New York 1978). However, most of the photographs are unpublished. The postcards cover the years 1947 to 1950. Van Vechten sometimes sent the postcards in envelopes - hence no date, postmark, and, on occasion, no note. At least two photographs can still be found in Van Vechten's correspondence located in Box 12 of The Banyan Press archive (900230A), one with a letter dated 24 April 1948 and another (of Christopher Isherwood) with a letter dated 9 June 1948.

Series V. Letters to Claude Fredericks, 1944-1988 12.93 Linear Feet
This series covers the years 1944-1988, but excludes letters written for or to The Banyan Press (1947-1950). Those can be found in The Banyan Press Archive 900230A. Personal letters from James Merrill, 1952-1988, have been moved to the Claude Fredericks Journal and Letters archive 900230C, where Claude Fredericks's Journal and his own outgoing letters are kept. Note that letters to Fredericks are also on some of the postcards sent to Fredericks from Carl Van Vechten in the late 1940s and early 1950s (900230B Box 47).
The letters in this series are from family members, many of the poets and writers represented in The Banyan Press archive, and, after 1961, Fredericks's colleagues at Bennington College (for example, Stephen Sandy, Nicholas Delbanco, Bernard Malamud, Ben Belitt, Lawrence Alloway, Camille Paglia), and many of his students (for example, Andrea Dworkin, Anne Waldman, Roger Kimball). Other correspondents include May Sarton, Evelyn Hofer, Anaïs Nin, Julian Beck, John Berryman, Alfonso Ossorio, Wallace Stevens, Alice B. Toklas, Dollie Pierre Chareau, and Thomas Merton.
In the list that follows the name of every correspondent in any given year from 1944 to 1958 is given only once for that year. Sometimes this means that this letter is the only letter received from that correspondent in the entire year, but it may also mean that this letter is the first of several or even of many in that year. From 1959 on the writer of every letter as it occurs in any given folder is listed. Names in parentheses after names listed help identify by association obscure correspondents. X indicates a missing or unknown name.
At this time, letters have been identified only through May 1963.
