Series II. Sketches and Drawings, 1938-1945 ca. 1,000 sheets
Sketches and drawings by Karl Schneider representing his work in America. Included are drawings for the art historian Edgar Wind, who hired Schneider to reconstruct Michelangelo's tomb of Julius II in the Medici Chapel. Most of the drawings concern Sears, Roebuck and Company projects such as "Craftsman" tools, toys, household wares, appliances, furniture, domestic and commercial interiors, store fronts, and "the ideal Sears store." Drawings are in pencil, colored pencil, charcoal, chalk, and wash.
Drawings are organized in two subseries by size.
Series II.A. Sketches and Drawings, 9 x 13 or smaller, 1937-1945 ca. 450 sheets
Drawings of architecture, household objects, and furniture. Many were designed for Sear, Roebuck and Company. Some drawings relate to the Julius II Tomb reconstruction project for Edgar Wind. A few drawings are from a Smithsonian Design Competition. There are many cross references between small and oversize sketches, small and oversize photographs, and glass negatives. These cross references are listed after the heading to which they pertain.
