Container List

Series I. Personal and Professional Papers, ca. 1911-1962 0.5 linear feet
The personal papers contain documents pertaining to Schneider's career, including German exhibitions and publications, and materials relating to his relationship with the Third Reich. Documents from his American phase include references, and immigration and licensing papers. There are, however, no personal letters and very few letters in Schneider's hand.
Documents concerning Schneider's personal life include his immigration documents (Militärpak, 1917-1919, Discharge, Reisepass, Visa, Birth Certificate) and documentation of his divorce (1935).
Schneider's professional life in America is chronicled by a small amount of correspondence, his 1944 contract with Liebl and Schlossman, and recommendations written on his behalf by Walter Gropius, Lewis Mumford, Walter Curt Behrendt, and others, to Sears, Roebuck and Company Also present are several eulogies in remembrance of Dr. Schneider.
Included are c. 250 photocopied pp. of articles and drawings pertaining to the early career of Schneider sent from the Karl-Schneider-Archiv Hamburg to augment the collection.

Documents from Germany record Schneider's professional affiliations, including contracts with the Kunstgewerbeschüle, Hamburg, his suspension from his position in 1933, his students' petitions for reinstatement, and the termination of his employment by the state. The files contain information about Schneider's publications and an inventory of Schneider's library.

Representing 26 buildings from Karl Schneider's Hamburg period (In the order of the above inventory).
Series II. Sketches and Drawings, 1938-1945 ca. 1,000 sheets
Sketches and drawings by Karl Schneider representing his work in America. Included are drawings for the art historian Edgar Wind, who hired Schneider to reconstruct Michelangelo's tomb of Julius II in the Medici Chapel. Most of the drawings concern Sears, Roebuck and Company projects such as "Craftsman" tools, toys, household wares, appliances, furniture, domestic and commercial interiors, store fronts, and "the ideal Sears store." Drawings are in pencil, colored pencil, charcoal, chalk, and wash.
Drawings are organized in two subseries by size.
Series II.A. Sketches and Drawings, 9 x 13 or smaller, 1937-1945 ca. 450 sheets
Drawings of architecture, household objects, and furniture. Many were designed for Sear, Roebuck and Company. Some drawings relate to the Julius II Tomb reconstruction project for Edgar Wind. A few drawings are from a Smithsonian Design Competition. There are many cross references between small and oversize sketches, small and oversize photographs, and glass negatives. These cross references are listed after the heading to which they pertain.

Series III. Photographs, ca. 1910-1944 ca. 800 photographs
Photographic prints document Schneider's architectural constructions in Germany, and include photographs of many unrealized plans and models, some personal photographs, and a substantial number of photographs of work by Schneider's German, Austrian, and American contemporaries, such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Lewis Mumford, and Louis Sullivan. The photos were taken by Ernst Scheel and Schneider's second wife, Ursula Wolff.
