Series I consists of files that were not integrated within the bulk of the records of the École de Varenne or the research files relating to Anne Willan's writings. It includes diplomas and awards received by Anne Willan and Mark Cherniavsky, correspondence with Julia and Paul Child, as well as press coverage relating to Willan's writings and the École La Varenne. The series comprises CDs and DVDs containing image files. Software formats were identified using a DROID (Digital Record Object IDentification) report from information recorded in the PRONOM technical registry. Series I.B. Files relating to Julia and Paul Child, 1974-1994 and undated 1.83 linear feet (2 boxes)
Julia and Paul Child supported the creation of the École La Varenne in 1975 and were actively involved in its programs for many years. There are documents relating to Child throughout the archive. Series I.B. consists of a binder of correspondence between Willan and Child, letters between Julia Child and students of the École la Varenne and clippings relating to Child.

Anne Willan was awarded the rank of Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur in 2014 for her work on the promotion of French gastronomy and received awards from culinary associations, such as a lifetime achievement award from the IACP (International Association of Culinary Professionals) in 1999 and awards from the James Beard Foundation. Series I.C. offers a comprehensive view of the recognition received by Willan from different organizations.

Series I.D. Press coverage, 1965-2014 8.67 linear feet (16 boxes)
Press clippings on the École La Varenne and on Willan's writings appear throughout the archive. However a distinct group of records consist of systematic coverage of press relating to Willan's professional activities for the years 1965-1998. Included are newspaper articles written by Willan, clippings relating to the École La Varenne, and clippings that appear to have been sent to Willan by publishing houses and that provide extensive press coverage on Willan's publications. For press clippings relating to later years, also see Series II and III.
Arrangement
The bulk of the clippings were gathered in three-ring plastic binders covering specific chronological periods. Later clippings dated 2004-2014 labeled "Interesting articles" are less systematic in their chronological filing.

Series II. École de cuisine La Varenne records, 1935-2018 (bulk 1975-2018) 32.21 linear feet (52 boxes. Computer media: 5.22 GB [2,138 files])
The École de cuisine La Varenne was founded in Paris in 1975 and was named after François-Pierre de la Varenne (1618-1678), the author of Le cuisinier françois, one of the founding texts of modern French cuisine. The school's records consist of administrative files, promotional materials, photographs, newsletters and other publications produced by the school, electronic records, as well as files of recipes and menus. The records document the school's programs at its different locations most notably in France and the United States. The series comprises CDs and DVDs containing image files. Software formats were identified using a DROID (Digital Record Object IDentification) report from information recorded in the PRONOM technical registry. La Varenne was first located in Paris in the rue Saint-Dominique in the 7th arrondissement near the Hôtel des Invalides beginning in 1975 and until 1990, a period during which it was accredited to deliver professional culinary degrees. After 1990 when the Paris location closed, the school's programs primarily continued in Burgundy and in the United States. The records of La Varenne in Paris consist of accounting and administrative files relating to the school's foundation, films and photographs documenting the school's premises and its staff, and newsletters. In 1982, Anne Willan and Mark Cherniavsky purchased the Château du Feÿ near Villecien in Burgundy as a family retreat. A large château dating primarily from the 17th century, it became the site of La Varenne's educational programs beginning in 1988. The school expanded its programs there furthermore after it closed its Paris location in 1990. The school's records at Le Feÿ consist of administrative files, a guestbook, promotional materials, bulletins, photographs documenting the school's premises and its staff, and electronic records. The series comprises CDs and DVDs containing image files. Software formats were identified using a DROID (Digital Record Object IDentification) report from information recorded in the PRONOM technical registry. Willan directed the culinary program at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia beginning in 1991. It consisted of a spring program of cooking classes that featured demonstrations by chefs and hands-on participation classes. The records that document this program consist of accounting and administrative files, brochures, masterbooks, photographs and research files.

Early in her career, Willan served as food editor for The Washington Star; the newspaper columns written by Willan are represented as drafts and typescripts in the archive. Later, Willan wrote over twenty-five cookbooks and books about gastronomy that have been translated into numerous languages. Her publications include La Varenne pratique, The Cookbook Library, a comprehensive survey on the history of gastronomy, the 17-volume Look and Cook series, and works that have a biographical component such as From My Château Kitchen and One Soufflé at a Time.
Included in the archive are drafts, typescripts, galleys, page proofs for Anne Willan's articles and cookbooks, electronic files, and annotated copies of the publications. The Anne Willan Papers complement the Anne Willan and Mark Cherniavsky Gastronomy Collection, which includes an extensive collection of early printed gastronomy books. The collection also includes drawings, ephemera, prints and manuscripts dating from the 16th to the late 20th century. Rare books and other selected works in the collection have been cataloged in the Library Catalog and can be searched by the name of the author or artist, by the title, or the topic.

The Anne Willan and Mark Cherniavsky gastronomy collection includes ephemera such as menus, advertising cards, broadsides, and newspaper tearsheets. There are cards advertising products of the Liebig Company and lithographs promoting the wine distributed by the Établissements Nicolas. Included are menus and recipes designed by the artists Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939), Léon Lebègue (1863-1944), Alice L. Waters (born 1944) and David L. Goines (born 1945).
