Smith (Harry) papers
Series III. Photographs, slides, and transparencies, 1940-2006, undated 2.46 Linear Feet (7 boxes)
This series consists of numerous photographs of Smith from every stage of his life, though the major portion of portraits date to the decade before his death. Also included are views of colleagues, such as Allen Ginsberg, students, and friends. Some are large format views by known American photographers.

27 Portraits of Smith and friends, 1940-1991
Black and white views of Harry Smith at work and at play. Includes a few original photographs from the 1940s, including a famous one of Smith audio taping a Native American ceremony. There are also views of Smith in his San Francisco days at the Jimbo Club, and numerous portraits of Smith, primarily from the 1980s, by known American photographers, including Steve Miles, John Palmer, John Cohen, Scott Ferro and Robert Tredici. Several photographs of Smith were taken by Allen Ginsberg, and Ginsberg also appears with Smith in some photographs. There are some later views of Greil Marcus, and random views of Smith artwork.

28-30 Portraits of Smith, friends, and collections, circa 1942- circa 1992
Color snapshots, polaroids, transparencies, negatives and slides showing Harry Smith primarily in the last decade of his life, with a few views from the 1940s through the 1970s. There are numerous views of Smith at the Naropa Institute, where he taught for his last four years. His final quarters at the Chelsea Hotel are amply documented, including his books and collections. Neighbors, students and friends also appear in these photographs. A highlight of this documentation is a series of mounted string figures that Smith collected. Only one of the mounted string figure objects is included in the GRI collection; the others are held in private collections or at the Smithsonian Folkways.

31-32 Film stills and artwork, circa 2000, undated
Two thick binders of color slides, transparencies and prints presenting selected views from nearly all of Smith's films and artwork. While most of these images appear to have been made by the Harry Smith Archives, a small number may have been made by Smith or during his lifetime.
