Scope and Content of Collection

The album records the Duc de Luynes's 1864 expedition to the Dead Sea with the photographs arranged according to the expedition itinerary, starting at Beirut and concluding with a view of the source of the Hasbany River. The expedition covered both the west and east sides of the Jordan River and the Dead Sea. Included are views of Nablus, the ruins of Araq el-Emir, the fortified hilltop palace Machaerus, the rock-cut architecture of Petra, and the Greco-Roman ruins of Gerasa, as well as views of the tributaries and source of the Jordan River.

The album is bound in blue morocco with gold tooling. The spine is stamped: J. Weber. Captions in pencil on lower right corner of mounts.
