The 60 stock books document acquisitions of paintings, watercolors and other artworks
made by M. Knoedler & Co. in New York and in the firm's other offices. Each entry
lists the seller from whom Knoedler bought the artwork, and the artist, title and date
of the work. Also included is brief information regarding the buyer who purchased the
work from Knoedler, along with the sales date.
There are entries relating to the acquisitions of watercolors in the ledgers described
in Series I.A., but the bulk of the transactions relating to watercolors are recorded in
ledgers listed in Series I.B. M. Knoedler & Co. did not maintain stock books
dedicated to artworks such as sculptures, tapestries, or medals. Rare transactions for
these are listed in the ledgers described in Series I.A.
Series I. Stock books is arranged in four subseries: I.A. Paintings; I.B. Watercolors;
I.C. London; I.D. Others.
Series I.A. Paintings, 1872-1970
24 Linear
Feet
(11 boxes)
The subseries contains eleven volumes of Knoedler's stock books for paintings
acquired by the firm from 1872 to 1970. Stock of paintings was numbered 1 to 17039, a
numbering system that was initiated in 1876 with the recording of new acquisitions in
stock book number 3 and was in use until December 1927. Beginning in January 1928, a
new numbering system was adopted with the letter A preceding the numbers. The first
volumes provide indices for steamers that were used for the shipment of the artworks.
The later volumes provide indices for the vendors from whom Knoedler acquired the
paintings. The first two books record a variety of transactions, including joint
acquisitions and commissions from other dealers, such as Goupil.
There are entries in this set of stock books for transactions relating to
watercolors, but the bulk of the transactions relating to watercolors are recorded in
ledgers described in Series I.B. M. Knoedler & Co. did not maintain stock books
dedicated to artworks such as sculptures, tapestries, or medals. Rare transactions for
these are listed in the ledgers described in Series I.A.
Series I.B. Watercolors, 1872-1972
17 Linear
Feet
(14 boxes)
The subseries contains seven stock books documenting watercolors that entered the
firm's stock from 1872 to 1972 and seven volumes providing indices of artist names for
the years 1892 to 1913. Beginning in 1899, Knoedler's stock of watercolors was
inventoried by the letters WC preceding the numbers. Beginning in January 1928, a new
numbering system was adopted with the letters WCA preceding the numbers.
Arranged in two groups: Stock books and Artists, A-Z.
Stock books, 1872-1972 7 volumes
Each entry in the stock books lists the seller from whom Knoedler bought the
artwork, and the artist, title and date of the work. Also included is brief
information regarding the buyer who purchased the work from Knoedler, along with the
sales date. The first volumes provide indices for steamers that were used for the
shipment of the artworks. The later volumes provide indices for the vendors from
whom Knoedler purchased the watercolors. A variety of transactions are recorded,
including joint acquisitions and commissions from other dealers, such as Goupil.

The acquisitions by the London branch of M. Knoedler & Co. are documented in
several sets of stock books. These sets contain overlapping information and appear to
have been used and maintained by the different offices of the firm. Before January
1928, artworks that had been assigned a stock number upon entering the stock of the
London office, were assigned a different stock number when entering the stock of the
New York office. Both offices developed separate numbering sequences. Beginning in
January 1928 and with the stock number A1, there appears to have been an attempt to
unify the numbering sequence of both offices. Other numbering systems consisting of
the letters L or F preceding the number indicate inventory from the London and Paris
offices, respectively. Are also included in this subseries stock books that were
maintained by the London office, but which record transactions by the New York
office.
Arrangement in three groupings: Paintings, Watercolors, and Others.
Paintings, 1891-1977
Stock 20-A4296, 1891-1967
The set consists of six volumes documenting paintings acquired by the London
office from 1891 to 1967. Entries under a London stock number may list a later
stock number assigned by the office in New York. Entries may also include a
shipment date to New York. Each volume includes an index or indices listing names
of artists. The archive includes a companion volume that records acquisitions of
watercolors. See: Watercolor stock book 1: WC30-WC7646, WCA1-WCA802 (Box 51). The
set partially duplicates information found in a set titled European stock books,
which is incomplete (Boxes 53-54).

Series II. Sales books includes a 21-volume set that documents sales by the New York
office from 1863 to 1971 and four volumes documenting sales by the London office from
1902 to 1937.
Series II. Sales books is arranged by sets of volumes.
Paintings and watercolors, 1863-1971
The sales books record the sales of paintings and watercolors, which were part of the
firm's stock or held on consignment at the firm. Each sales book contains an index
documenting the client who purchased the artwork from Knoedler and auction houses for
items that were sent to auction. The overlap in volumes with dates from 1928 to 1948
does not include duplicated information on sales. The entries in the sales books are
recorded by chronological order of sales. Consulting the record of a sale for a
specific stock number is facilitated by the brief notations on sales dates that are
listed under stock numbers in the stock books (Series I).
Series III. Commission books comprises 20 volumes documenting commissions or
consignments. The terms "commission" and "consignment" appear to be used interchangeably
in notations appearing throughout the volumes, but the term "commission" is prevalent in
the primary set of volumes, which dates from 1879 to 1973. This set records transactions
with collectors, artists and other dealers. Beginning in 1946, the firm differentiated
works consigned by artists from other types of consignments, recording them in separate
ledgers.
Before April 1892, commissions were recorded unnumbered. In April 30, 1892, a new
numbering system was adopted with the commissions inventoried by the letter C preceding
the numbers. Beginning in January 1928, commissions were inventoried with the letters CA
preceding the numbers. For consignments from artists from 1946 to 1972, the letter S
precedes the number.
Series IV. Inventory cards contains cards that record selected acquisitions,
consignments and sales of paintings and watercolors by M. Knoedler & Co.'s offices
in New York, London and Paris. Notations on the cards also document void transactions,
owner credits and trades, and returns to the owner (RTO). While the cards duplicate
information found in the stock, sales and commission books, they facilitate the
retrieval of information in these ledgers for different types of searches, such as the
names of artists, buyers or stock numbers. However, cards only exist for a limited
number of M. Knoedler & Co.'s transactions.
In other to facilitate the consultation of the inventory cards, the Getty Research
Institute plans on digitizing the entire Series IV.
Arrangement
Series IV. Inventory cards is filed according to seven types, which were defined by the
Knoedler firm: customers; buyer-artist; artist-buyer; current alphabetical; current
numerical; sold alphabetical; sold numerical.
Under the category Customers, cards contain a summary of transactions, including
purchases, sales, consignments, and shared acquisitions with other dealers. Under the
category Buyer-artist, each card records a single transaction.
Each card contains a summary of transactions, including purchases, consignments, and
shared acquisitions with Knoedler. The cards are filed by alphabetical order of names
of customers or vendors.
Each card documents a single transaction, listing the title and artist of the
artwork. The cards are arranged by alphabetical order of names of buyers.
Series V. Receiving and shipping records consists of receipts, logs, and other records
concerning the shipping of artwork from Europe and within the United States, including
works received and examined but not acquired by M. Knoedler & Co. The bulk of the
records concerns works received and sent by the New York office from 1893 to 1988. Also
included are a small file related to the London office, and for the years 1929-1932,
documentation regarding the firm's office in Chicago.
Arrangement
Series V. Receiving and shipping records is arranged in four subseries: Series V.A.
Receiving records; Series V.B. Shipping records; Series V.C. London; Series V.D.
Chicago.

The receiving records consist of five receiving books documenting works received by
M. Knoedler & Co. from 1893 to 1910, a 70-volume set documenting works received
from 1910 to 1988 (receiving numbers 1 to 71000), and one volume documenting works
received from foreign vendors. The receiving books contain indices and logistical
information, such as dates, owners, addresses, employee initials and, occasionally,
remarks. There are gaps in the documentation for the following years: 1898,

Series V.D. Receiving and shipping records from the Chicago office, 1929-1932
1.5 Linear

(4 boxes)
Shipping and receiving records for the Chicago office (622 South Michigan Avenue)
contains information regarding the shipment of artworks to clients, art galleries,
museums, and the firm's office in New York.
Series VI. Correspondence, one of the largest series in the archive, consists primarily
of the correspondence files maintained by the New York and the London offices of M.
Knoedler & Co., but it also contains files from the firm's other offices in Paris
and Chicago. The correspondence generally concerns possible sales or purchases of
artworks, and occasionally features personal notes. Of particular interest is the
interoffice correspondence between the New York, London, Paris, and Chicago offices,
with notes or instructions directed to staff and information about sales, potential
sales, clients, collectors, and collections. The archive contains interoffice
correspondence files kept by each office. The correspondence of the firm's library in
New York--kept separate from the firm's general correspondence--concerns requests for
documentation and illustrations of artworks, inquiries about publications, and includes
letters received from the firm's library in London.
Correspondence received or sent by the Knoedler firm may be part of the records of
staff or associates of the Knoedler firm who subsequently worked at other institutions
and may be in the holdings of these institutions. The Clark Art Institute has among its
holdings records of William Collins, who worked for Knoedler before working at the
Clark. The Paul Mellon Center in London holds correspondence files from the Knoedler
Gallery, which were received among the records of Frank Simpson who worked at the
Knoedler Gallery in London before working at the Paul Mellon Center.
Selected portions of Series VI. Correspondence have been digitized. To view online
copies of letters preserved in letter copying books, connect to digitized letter
copying books.
Arrangement
Series VI. Correspondence is organized into the following subseries: Series VI.A.
General correspondence; Series VI.B. Interoffice correspondence; Series VI.C. Library
correspondence; Series VI.D. Copies of letters sent; Series VI.E. London office
correspondence; Series VI.F. Other offices; Series VI.G. Correspondence dossiers.
Series VI.A. General correspondence, 1879-1971
343 Linear
Feet
(806 boxes and 1
flatfile)
Subseries VI.A. General correspondence contains letters received by the New York
office of M. Knoedler Co. from clients, artists, banks, associates and other dealers.
The files also include selected copies of letters sent by Knoedler. The correspondence
includes letters of inquiries about sales, negotiations of prices, appraisals, loans
of artworks for exhibitions, and occasionally personal notes. Each year of
correspondence typically includes topical files, such as appraisals, asking prices,
changes of attributions, donations, and legal files.
For letters written by the painter Winslow Homer to M. Knoedler & Co., also see
the twelve letters dating from 1900 to 1904 held by the Archives of American Art and
digitized in 2014, and the letters from Homer to the firm that date from
1901-1902, 1904, 1908, and that are held at The Clark Art Institute.
Arrangement
The correspondence files were organized first by year and by alphabetical order for
each year. Large files for certain associates, in particular the art dealer P. &
D. Colnaghi, are divided in certain years by month of the year and between files of
letters received and letters sent (i.e. "From Colnaghi January," "From Colnaghi
February," ..., "To Colnaghi January," "To Colnaghi February," ...). In each
alphabetical folder, such as Ab, Ac, the documents were roughly in the order received
from January to December, rather than arranged by author. Topical folders, such as
asking prices, are filed at the end of the alphabetical range. The correspondence
files dating from 1921 to 1971 were generally kept in strict order, while the previous
years were not and these have been filed according to the order found for later
years.
Notations in pencil in the upper left corner of letters indicate the expected filing
location. Typically, these notations simply identify the author of the letter, but in
certain cases they suggest a topical filing or a cross-reference filing. Files for
specific Knoedler staff or associates often appear under the name of the author of the
letter. However, personal expenses of staff or traveling documentation of certain
staff may be filed under the name of the staff member rather than the agency sending
the letter.
Comments in the letters (i.e. "I am enclosing a photograph of the painting") suggest
that these were often accompanied by photographs illustrating the artwork discussed.
However, in most instances, the photographs are no longer with the letters, having
been separated by Knoedler staff and filed under artworks in a different portion of
the firm's records. These photographs are filed by artist and stock number in the
portion of the archive now titled Series. VII. Photographs (Series VII.A. Artist
files).

Series VI.B. Interoffice correspondence, 1911-1969
60.3 Linear
Feet
(130 boxes and 1
flatfile)
The interoffice correspondence consists of letters and cables received by the New
York office from the other offices, primarily London and Paris, between 1911 and 1970.
For the years 1929-1932, there are also correspondence files from an office in
Chicago, and for the years 1935-1936 from one in Newport, R.I. The correspondence
concerns sales, clients, artworks that are available for purchase, and general
business concerns of the offices. There is usually for each year, a folder containing
the lists of the works sold by each office or in storage at that location.
Arrangement
For each office, the interoffice correspondence was filed by year and month. Each
year usually includes a folder containing the cables for that year and a folder
containing lists of the works sold by the office or in storage at the office. There
are also files for copies of letters sent by the New York office or files for copies
received by each office from another one.
