Asher (Betty) Papers
Series I. Family photographs, 1860-1998, undated 5.8 Linear Feet (11 boxes, 1 flatfile)
This series consists of family photographs dating from the 19th century of both Betty Asher's family, the Michaels, and James Asher's family. It includes views of Asher from birth, through childhood and adolescence, nursing school, marriage, motherhood, and her later career as an art dealer. There are many images of her daughter Rayna and her son, the artist Michael Asher, from infancy through adulthood. Mixed in with this extensive photodocumentation is a series of Shulman photographs of the Asher home designed by architect Ronnie Walker, which features many views of the children. There is also a group of photographs documenting the art collection at another Asher home known as the Oakhurst house, a portion of which was shot by Michael Asher. Art and family dinners and parties at Betty Asher's later home and elsewhere are amply documented. There are numerous files of Asher's travel photographs, and several of the 1992 tribute to Betty Asher at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
Other photographs, slides and transparencies are catalogued under the series to which they belong, such as correspondence, business files, and artists' files.
