Tie It On Event at the Bloomingdale's Newport Beach
correspondence with color photograph.
Series III contains the notes, reflections, and daily materials that Herms refers to as
comprising a snapshot of his brain. Often there are handmade calendars, astrological
charts, and poetry. Some journals pertain to a specific project and may therefore
overlap with Series IV. Project and exhibition files. Phone numbers, business
appointments, and grocery lists appear in this series when found in combination with
drawings or other artistic content, while exclusively mundane materials are more likely
filed under Series X. Personal.
Arrangement
Arranged in chronological order by year. Where the artist was not able to assign a
specific year, he indicated the decade, as, for example, 1960s, or sometimes mid-1960s,
or late-1960s. These files are grouped at the beginning of a given decade.
This series documents the artwork that Herms has produced for some fifty years. It
contains files for projects such as public sculptures, as well as individual works on
paper, photographs of work or work series, photographs of exhibitions, object lists and
arrangements for exhibitions, photographs by Herms and occasionally of Herms, where the
piece in question is part of a collaborative project with a photographer, such as James
Fee. There is some overlap between this series and Series III. Journals, which may also
contains notes and sketches for art projects. Series VI. Tap City Circus and Series VII.
Love Press, also contain project files, and Series IV. inevitably contains Love Press
material. The judgement as to where a given file should be categorized has been largely
the artist's decision.
Arrangement
This series is arranged in chronological order. Herms often supplied the date of a
given work or suggested a decade, such as the 1960s, or the late 1960s. These files are
placed at the beginning of each decade, that is, preceding a specific date, such as
1962. Within each annual date, materials have been arranged in the following sequence:
photo-based artwork, photographs of artwork, poetry, assorted/mixed media. Note that not
every year contains material in each of these categories. Files from 1958 to 1980 have
been cataloged in greater detail. Nearly half of the project files contain color
photographs, negatives, or otherwise sensitive materials stored separately from the
paper-based portion of the archive. Oversize boxes and flat file folders hold artwork
such as collages, silkscreen prints, drawings, and paintings. Most of these large works
are undated.

Demo of Apache Havoc. 1 computer disc (CD-R) :
digital ; 4 3/4 in.
This series contains material, often produced by Herm's Love Press, that Herms used in
his nearly annual fundraising events. Essentially auctions, or raffles, to help sustain
the artist and his family, these were invitation events where Herms would sell common
household items along with art work, often to the accompaniment of music, and in general
festivity. The name of the event evolved over time in continuous word play, from raffle
to roofle, baffle, rawful, ruffle, earful, and eyeful. The series contains silkscreened
or handprinted invitations, announcements, tickets, and other ephemera, along with
photographs.
This series documents the press that Herms created, initially as a hand press to print
visual poetry. Most of the files contain examples of work Herms produced with the press,
along with test prints, templates, or raw materials. Various versions of the press's
mailing list appear in the files, along with some financial records and product
brochures. This series overlaps significantly with Series IV. Work files, and the
decision as to where a given item is filed was generally Herms'.
This series is comprised of class rosters, correspondence, students' essays, Herms'
teaching notes, yearbooks and photographs documenting Herms' teaching positions.
Arrangement
Arranged alphabetically with miscellaneous materials at the end. Major academic
institutions' files are further arranged, usually with administrative files, including
class rosters and instructor's evaluations, correspondence such as students' letters to
Herms and school memoranda and teaching notes.

Artist files contain the work of more than 200 artists, and include manuscripts, small
works of art, printed matter, posters, and photographs. Artists represented in this
series overlap considerably with those in Series I.Correspondence, as they are largely
the California artists and writers who were and are Herms' friends and colleagues.
Arrangement
Arranged in alphbetical order by the artists' last names.
More than one hundred books were transferred to the library's general collection and
are identified as part of the Herms collection by a note in the library catalog record.
Those that remain in the archive are out of scope for the library collection but still
pertinent to Herms, including a biography of Robert Kennedy, and an Italian comic
book.
Arrangement
Books are arranged in chronological order by date of publication.
More than one hundred serials were separated to the library and are identified as part
of the Herms collection by a note in the library record for the serial. Those that
remain are out of scope for the general library but still pertinent to Herms have been
retained, and these range from local arts newspapers to national humor magazines.
Arrangement
Serials arranged in chronological order by year. Assorted materials found in serials,
or envelopes belonging to serials separated to the library, are randomly arranged at the
end of the series.
This series comprises announcements, fliers, brochures, and posters for George Herms'
solo and group shows, as well as such materials related to others artists. If, however,
an artist has a file in Series XII. Artist files, solo exhibition ephemera is filed in
that series. Original drafts or paste-ups of Herms designed ephemera is filed in Series
IV. Project files. In addition, this series contains an array of material Herms received
in the mail.
Arrangement
Arranged in seven groupings, and within each group in chronological order by year,
except for institution newsletters, which are arranged in alphabetical order by the
first letter of the institution name.
