The series contains files for artists whose work was sold by Lunn, and whom in certain
cases, such as photographers Berenice Abbott, Ansel Adams, Robert Frank, and McDermott
& McGough, and printmakers Lars Bo and Jacob Kainen, Lunn represented exclusively or
for a substantial length of time, and in doing so shaped the market for these artist's
work. The files span from Lunn's early days as a dealer to his untimely death, and
include printmakers, whose work he dealt in primarily under Graphics Ltd. and
photographers, whose work he sold through Lunn Gallery and Lunn Ltd., as well as art
works such as windows and furniture designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and African
sculpture.
Lunn was equally passionate about both nineteenth- and twentieth-century photography,
and work by most photographers of note as well as by many lesser-known names passed
through his hands. Felice Beato, Julia Margaret Cameron, Désiré Charnay,
André-Adolphe-Eugène Disdéri, Maxime Ducamp, Hill and Adamson, Félix Nadar, Charles
Nègre, and William Henry Fox Talbot were just some of the well-known nineteenth-century
photographers whose work he dealt in. Lunn Gallery and Lunn Ltd. had extensive holdings
of works by early- to mid-twentieth-century photographers including Lewis Hine, Ansel
Adams, Robert Frank, Walker Evans, Berenice Abbott and Eugène Atget. He was the
exclusive representative for George Brassaï, and he also represented the Diane Arbus
estate. In addition to promoting established photographers Lunn also championed and
published the work of a younger, and often controversial, generation of
later-twentieth-century photographers which included Robert Mapplethorpe, Andres
Serrano, McDermott & McGough, Pierre et Giles, Joel-Peter Witkin, and Wouter
Deyrutter. Files on all of these artists can be found in this series.
While many artists are represented by a single, inclusive file (in some cases these
files contain only copy photographs and are so noted), files for those artists with whom
Lunn had extensive dealings may include such materials as biographical information,
curriculum vitae, reviews, and ephemera such as exhibition announcements and brochures;
correspondence files; business files; files for contracts, inventories and price lists,
clients, copy prints and photocopies, and materials generated by Lunn Gallery; and
exhibition files and files for special projects such as portfolios or books.
The series also contains occasional thematic files such as photographs categorized by
medium, format, or century.
Arrangement
The series is arranged alphabetically by artist, or in a few cases by subject.
Color print inscribed on verso: Merry Christmas / Love, Berenice.

Exhibition documentation, 1997
Polaroids and photocopies of Temple of Photographic
Art letterpress labels/edition certificates.
The series contains general files for Lunn's extensive international roster of clients,
as well as documentation of appraisals, consigments, and exhibition loans. Clients are
broadly defined as any individual, gallery, museum, or business with whom Lunn engaged
in the acts of buying or selling works of art.
Lunn was instrumental in the formation of many notable photography collections, both
public and private. Of particular note are the collections that were assembled by the
Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal, the Gilman Paper Company in New York, and
by collectors such as Sam Wagstaff and Manfred Heiting. Files on these and many other
collections are included in this series.
Also included are client correspondence files grouped according to medium (graphics and
photography); client card files; and files on client matters pertaining to appraisals,
consignments, and exhibition loans.
Arrangement
The series is arranged alphabetically by the client's last name or by institution name
in direct order, with the exception of the photography correspondence files which are
arranged first by year and then alphabetically by the client's last name.

Photography Exhibitions, 1997 July
Includes announcement, for Paris exhibitions and materials regarding Rencontres
Internationales de la photographie.
The series encompasses the history of the firm as it becomes a corporation, raises
capital through stock offerings, and ultimately repurchases the shares and operates with
Lunn as the sole stockholder. Included are corporate records, financial statements and
tax returns, inventory lists, financial statement working papers, bank records, and a
large volume of receipts for travel, business promotion and other business expenses.
Lunn Gallery was established by Harry H. Lunn and a small group of investors in 1968.
In 1970-1971, a new group of investors joined with the existing stockholders to form
Graphics International Ltd. as a holding company, with Lunn Gallery continuing to be the
operating entity. This provided capital for building inventory. Bank financing also
provided funds for operations and expansion. All of these developments are documented
here.
By August 1982, financial conditions had changed such that Lunn was able to buy out the
stockholders, principally with inventory, and become the sole stockholder of the firm,
now called Lunn Ltd. Material regarding the civil suit that Clive Gray, one of the
largest stockholders, instituted against the company in 1995-1996 is contained in this
series.
In July 1983, Lunn closed the gallery at 406 Seventh Street in Washington D. C. and
began operating as a private dealer. From then until his death Lunn ran the company by
himself, assisted at times by Michael Howells, Wouter Deyrutter, his grown children, and
others. Their expenses, as well as business expenses including travel and promotional
expenses, are included among the receipts in the series.
Lunn also participated in a few joint real estate ventures which are reflected in this
series. In the early 1980s he formed a partnership in which he held a one-third interest
to develop six new galleries at 406 Seventh Street, N. W. in Washington, D. C. He also
acted as agent for the 1200 East Capitol Company, a condominium project, from 1983 to
1988.
Arrangement
The material in this series is arranged thematically, roughly following the history of
Graphics International Ltd. and Lunn Ltd.
