Le case ed i monumenti di Pompei was an exhaustive work
meant to be a complete catalog of remains from Pompeii, from topography to plans of
individual buildings to paintings and mosaics. The project was initiated by Antonio
Niccolini (1772-1850) and carried out by his sons Fausto and Felice and his grandson
Antonio. The work was issued in over 100 fascicles in the period from 1854 to 1896.
Vander Poel was in the initial phases of this project. He had begun collecting images,
but had not yet added analysis.
