Series V.F. Early measured drawings of Pompeii by Charles François Mazois, 1809-1981, undated
0.8 Linear
Feet
Charles François Mazois (1783-1826), a French architect, spent the years 1809-1811 in
residence at the excavations at Pompeii. His stay culminated in a four-volume work
Les Ruines de Pompéi, published in Paris from
1824-1838, which included his drawings and measurements of the site. This was the
first extensive graphic work on Pompeii.
Vander Poel initiated a course of general research on Mazois for an analysis and
documentation of his work. He gained access to Mazois' original drawings for the work
and he was particularly interested in documenting variations between the original and
the printed versions of his plans and drawings.
