Series II. Tatiana Warscher papers, 1912-1997, bulk 1924-1960

|
Tatiana Warscher (variant form Warsher) was born in Moscow on 18 June 1880. From 1898
to 1901, she attended the Women's College of the University of St. Petersburg, where she
was a student of Michael Rostovtzeff. In 1921, Warscher fled from Russia and the
aftermath of the Revolution. Leaving Dorpat where she had been working as a teacher, she
went first to Berlin and then to Paris, where she again met Rostovtzeff in 1923. He
encouraged her to move to Rome and to study Pompeii, an interest of hers since a summer
spent in Italy in 1911.
|
By 1924, Warscher had followed Rostovtzeff's advice. She devoted the rest of her life
to the study of Pompeii, either working independently or as Rostovtzeff's assistant.
Indeed, Rostovtzeff, either directly or indirectly, appears to have provided much of
Warscher's financial support in the late 1920s and 1930s. In this same period,
Rostovtzeff was also providing intellectual support. By October 1931, if not before,
Rostovtzeff was guiding Warscher's research toward a project which would develop into
the "Codex Topographicus Pompeianus," a massive work intended to document every
structure in Pompeii. The first volume of this work was produced circa 1935, and
Warscher continued working on the project throughout her life.
|
Also at the urging of Michael Rostovtzeff, Tatiana Warscher shifted from casual
photography of Pompeii to systematic documentation of the site. Her resulting
photographic collection is important for its breadth and its detailed archaeological
focus. Her photographs, shot over a span of almost fifty years, record structures and
details of the site that are now lost, due either to the Allied bombing of Pompeii in
World War II or to the general weathering and disintegration of the remains through
time. Although Warscher did not have the skills of a professional photographer, she used
an archaeologist's eye to document the general architecture of structures, as well as
details of stonework, paintings and mosaics. These photographs provided the material for
her densely illustrated manuscripts and they were also a source of income. Warscher sold
her images of Pompeii to the photographic archives of the Deutsches Archäologisches
Institut in Rome.
|
Halsted Vander Poel met Warscher in Rome in the late 1950s. She encouraged his interest
in Pompeii and in many respects he became her intellectual heir. Most of Vander Poel's
Pompeii projects, ranging from his excavations at the Casa di Meleagro to his planned
new edition of Helbig's classic work on the paintings from the site, found their roots
in Warscher's research. Vander Poel was bequeathed Tatiana Warscher's papers when she
died in Rome on 2 December 1960.
|
Much of the material presented in this subseries lacks a specific date and individual
items are therefore marked as undated. However, Warscher's own material dates from circa
1912 to 1960. Vander Poel's additions, when lacking a specific date, can be dated in the
general range from circa 1960 to 1997.
|
Arrangement note |
The Tatiana Warscher papers are arranged in six subseries by type of material. A
limited amount of additional Warscher material is scattered in subsequent series where
it was integrated into Vander Poel's materials.

Series II.A. Letters, 1924-1997, bulk 1924-1947
0.8 Linear
Feet
|
|
This subseries contains circa 200 letters and postcards received by Tatiana Warscher.
The letters, predominately in Russian, tend to be general, with comments on health,
travels, mutual friends, and work.
|
|
Letters from Michael Rostovtzeff, the historian of ancient Greece and Rome, comprise
the majority. The Rostovtzeff letters reflect the correspondents' original
teacher-student relationship. Most letters indicate Rostovtzeff's continued
intellectual guidance and financial support, including the work of photographing and
documenting Pompeii, for which Rostovtzeff paid Warscher through his Yale University
research funds. Also included are one letter and several postcards from Rostovtzeff's
wife. Vander Poel commissioned English translations of Rostovtzeff's letters. Each
letter has been hand-numbered and keyed to the translations. The arrangement of the
letters is dictated by the numbering.
|
|
Letters from several Russian émigré writers, including Nina Berberova, V. Korsak,
Z.N. Gippius, Mark Aldanov, and Ivan Bunin, follow. Each letter is again hand-numbered
and provided with an English translation commissioned by Vander Poel. The arrangement
of the letters is dictated by the numbering.

Series II.B. Writings, 1935-1997
11.3 Linear
Feet
|
|
This subseries contains all the material relating to Tatiana Warscher's published and
unpublished writings. Although she published very little, Warscher was a prolific
writer. She produced works on Pompeian gardens, architectural marbles, several keys
and concordances to important scholarly volumes and a complete overview of the city,
the "Codex Topographicus Pompeianus." Unfortunately, the fact that there would always
be more excavations and more discoveries at Pompeii combined with Warscher's
perfectionist sensibilities prevented her from believing that any of her massive
typescripts was ever complete and ready for publication.
|
|
Tatiana Warscher's life's work was the creation of the 25-volume "Codex Topographicus
Pompeianus." Organized topographically, the "Codex" includes extracts from published
references, Warscher's own comments and observations and photographs for each building
documented. The photographic component of the work was very important and Warscher
used both her own photographs and those available from vendors, such as Alinari and
the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut. Warscher intended to document every excavated
structure in Pompeii, but her work was constrained by limited access to certain areas
of the site. The earliest extant copy of a volume of the "Codex" dates to circa 1935
and Warscher continued working on the project until her death. The "Codex" was never
published but survives in variant typescript copies held by a small number of research
libraries.
|
|
Various materials (circa 3,100 leaves with 3,500 photographs) related to the "Codex
Topographicus Pompeianus" comprise the first section of this subseries. This includes
a limited amount of material produced by Warscher herself and a much larger quantity
of material added by Vander Poel. One copy of the volume entitled "Appendix: Via
Mercurio" was actually assembled by Warscher herself. This is followed by copies of
reconstructed Warscher "Codex" volumes, commissioned by Vander Poel. The majority of
the material in this subseries, however, is material compiled by Vander Poel for a
revised version of the "Codex," which he intended to publish.
|
|
Warscher's other writings follow the "Codex" materials. These are primarily
unpublished manuscripts and typescripts. Vander Poel added translations, copies and
notes to several items in this section of the subseries. In some instances, it is not
always clear whether the typescripts are Warscher's originals or later copies
commissioned by Vander Poel. The arrangement of these materials is roughly
chronological.

This appears to be a mix of original material and new material collected by
Vander Poel for his intended revision of the "Codex." It includes photographic
copies of pages from the original "Codex," as well as pages of text and
photographs. Some of the pages of text are original with Warscher's writing, while
others are Vander Poel's later additions. The same holds true for the photographs.
They include Warscher's original photographs, prints from commercial vendors and
photographs taken or commissioned by Vander Poel.

Series II.C. Photographic documentation of Pompeii, 1912-1960
18.2 Linear
Feet
|
|
Warscher's set of almost 5,000 3.5 x 4.5 inch format acetate negatives and the prints
produced from them comprise this subseries. These photographs represent the core of
Warscher's attempt to systematically document the remains of Pompeii. Her intent was
to photograph the entire site, but for much of the time that she studied Pompeii,
Warscher's access to certain parts of the site was restricted, particularly in the
area of the "nuovi scavi." However, with the exception of these off-limits areas, her
coverage of the site is quite thorough. Additional Warscher negatives in other formats
are also found in the following subseries.
|
|
Although, with few exceptions, Warscher's individual negatives are undated, it is
clear that Warscher photographed the same structure at different times. Not all the
images of a structure are from the same period, as is shown by changed states of
preservation. The earliest image in the collection, showing the peristyle in the Casa
dell'Ancora Nera (VI 10, 7), negative number 418a, dates to a vacation trip to the
site in 1912.
|
|
The individual photographic prints presented in this subseries come from three
sources. About 900 prints were produced for Warscher and are identifiable by notations
in her hand on the back. Another group of circa 1,000 prints were made for Vander Poel
from Warscher's negatives. Many of these have notations in Vander Poel's hand. A third
group of almost 3,000 contact prints were produced by the Getty Research Institute.
These prints are identifiable by their black borders.
|
|
The photographs of the site are arranged in region and insula order. When preserved,
Warscher's original housing envelopes are included with the photographs. Notations on
the envelopes indicate negative counts for structures in various years. Also the
glassine envelopes used by Vander Poel for rehousing Warscher's negatives are included
if they have added notes. Warscher's negative lists follow the photographs.
