Series I.A. By region or city, 1857-1996, undated
14.6 linear feet
(35 boxes)
Arranged from North to South, the files document artwork by artists active in the German-speaking parts of Europe. Geissler's
geographical division includes Northern Germany, East and West Prussia, Westphalia, the various Rhine regions, Hesse, Swabia,
Saxony, Palatinate, Bavaria, Austria, Switzerland, and Silesia. Some files document artists active in particular cities, including
Augsburg, Cologne, Dresden, Ingolstadt, Munich, Nuremberg, Prague, Strassbourg, Stuttgart, and Wolfenbüttel. The most extensive
files are on artists active in Nuremberg, Augsburg, and Prague. The majority of the artists are from German-speaking regions,
but also included are artists from the Netherlands and Italy who travelled to Austria, Germany, or Switzerland.
Arrangement
Geissler's geographical arrangement from North to South by region or city is preserved, as is the idiosyncratic listing of
artists within each region or city. Some artists are filed under their name and some are filed under the name of the region
or city in which they were active.
