Container List

Series I. Artist files, 1857-1996, undated 17.1 linear feet (41 boxes)
The artist files comprise a wealth of material on artists active in the German-speaking parts of Europe from the mid-16th to the mid-17th century. The geographically arranged files are followed by files on a few selected artists.
The files vary in extent, but most include numerous study photographs, annotated printed matter, and notes. The study photographs are frequently extensively annotated by Geissler on their verso and bear stamps or labels of various repositories. Often present are letters to Geissler from art historians, art collectors, or staff at various institutions as well as carbon copies of letters sent by Geissler.
The file names follow captions inscribed on original enclosures, with the German names of regions and cities given in English where possible. Since the original loaction of all items in this series is maintained, Geissler's original box numbers are also included for each file.
Arrangement
Arranged in two subseries: by region or city and selected artists.
Series I.A. By region or city, 1857-1996, undated 14.6 linear feet (35 boxes)
Arranged from North to South, the files document artwork by artists active in the German-speaking parts of Europe. Geissler's geographical division includes Northern Germany, East and West Prussia, Westphalia, the various Rhine regions, Hesse, Swabia, Saxony, Palatinate, Bavaria, Austria, Switzerland, and Silesia. Some files document artists active in particular cities, including Augsburg, Cologne, Dresden, Ingolstadt, Munich, Nuremberg, Prague, Strassbourg, Stuttgart, and Wolfenbüttel. The most extensive files are on artists active in Nuremberg, Augsburg, and Prague. The majority of the artists are from German-speaking regions, but also included are artists from the Netherlands and Italy who travelled to Austria, Germany, or Switzerland.
Arrangement
Geissler's geographical arrangement from North to South by region or city is preserved, as is the idiosyncratic listing of artists within each region or city. Some artists are filed under their name and some are filed under the name of the region or city in which they were active.

Series III. Card indexes, 1877, 1938, 1957-1989, undated 5.47 linear feet (10 boxes)
Geissler maintained card indexes of drawings in museums and in private collections, and a card index of artists. These meticulously organized indexes are cross-referenced and refer to thousands of drawings, many more that are documented in the two previous research files.
Arrangement
The original filing order is preserved but most indexes are arranged alphabetically.
Series III.A. Museum collections, 1877, 1955-1989, undated 3.75 linear feet (9 boxes)
Geissler's catalog of drawings in museum collections consists of notes handwritten on paper approximately 5 x 10 cm. in size. Most collections are in Germany, but also in other European countries, mainly Austria, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, and Russia; a few are in the United States and Canada, as well as in Israel (Jerusalem). Occasionally included is correspondence, mainly letters received by Geissler.
The indexes are divided into three groups: by city, by country, and in Bavaria. Filed at the end of the group arranged by country are bibliographical references, and a list of photographs in the collection of Bildarchiv Foto Marburg.
The group on drawings in Bavaria consists of notes on artworks and inventories held mainly at Bayerische Staatsgemälde Sammlungen in Munich, and in various collections in Augsburg. A separate group originally filed here are photographs and research papers on Christoph Schwarz from Ingolstadt.
Arrangement
The first two groups are filed alphabetically and the original German filing order is retained. The Bavaria group is subdivided into two sequences, GI and GII, and includes a separate research file on Christoph Schwarz from Ingolstadt.

65 Bavaria, 1957-1958, undated
This file contains Geissler's notes on artworks and inventories in various collections in Bavaria, predominantly at Bayerische Staatsgemälde Sammlungen in Munich, also in Augsburg. Some notes concern artworks known only from reference sources. The cards are numbered by Geissler in two sequences: GI (numbers 1-27) and GII (numbers 127-137, 152, 157-158, 162-166, 169-170,172). Part of the GI sequence are notes on artworks and inventories in collections outside of Bavaria: Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna (folder 10), Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, Massachusetts (folder 11), and Hampton Court Palace in London, England (folder 12).
A separate group Geissler originally filed here are notes, letters received, and transcripts of sixteenth-century documents related to his research on the court painter Christoph Schwarz from Ingolstadt.

Christoph Schwarz (Ingolstadt), 1957-1966, undated
The Christoph Schwarz file consists of Geissler's notes; letters he received from Schloss Ingolstadt, Städtische Kunstsammlungen Augsburg, Dr. Schmid in Geisenfeld, Jarmila Vacková in Prague, and R. Till at Magistrat der Stadt Wien; and transcripts of sixteenth-century documents from the collection of Bayerisches Hauptstaatsarchiv in Munich, which mention Schwarz. Among the transcripts are financial records of the Duchy of Bavaria, excerpts from an orderly book, correspondence of William V, Duke of Bavaria, and excerpts from his decrees. Also present are a few photocopies of some of the documents. Filed together with the above materials are fourteen photographs, including one in color; notes; a letter to Geissler from K.H. Rochels in Leverkusen, and a letter to Geissler from Dr. Kaczmarzyk at Propyläen-Kunsthandlung in Berlin (folders 24-25). These items were originally filed by Geissler in a binder with correspondence.

Series IV.A. General correspondence, 1954-1990, undated 1.04 linear feet (2 and a half boxes)
Geisser's professional correspondence dates from 1954 to 1990. It includes exchanges with art historians, private collectors, and curators at art museums and other institutions holding collections of prints and drawings. Among art historians are several well known experts on medieval, Renaissance and Baroque art such as as Günter Bandmann, Kurt Bauch, Jan Białostocki, Bruno Bushart, Luitpold Dussler, Julius S. Held, Werner Haftmann, Egbert Haverkamp Begemann, Justus Müller Hofstede, Thomas DaCosta Kaufmann, Dieter Koepplin, Klaus Lankheit, Konrad Oberhuber, Konrad Renger, Marcel Roethlisberger, Werner Schade, Hana Seifertová, and Horst Vey. The most extensive correspondence is with Werner Schade. Also present is Geissler's correspondence with well known collectors and art experts Jacques Fryszman, Fritz Lugt, and I.Q. van Regteren Altena; and with editors at the publishing house Macmillan Publishers Ltd. The correspondence is of a purely professional nature, dealing with matters of connoisseurship, exchange of information concerning artists and the current whereabouts of their work, and, to a lesser extent, iconography.
Of particular interest is the photocopy of a 1967 letter to Geissler from the widow of the twentieth-century German painter and photographer Wols (pseudonym of Alfred Otto Wolfgang Schulze) in which she describes Wols's life, including internment in France under Nazi occupation during World War II, and relates details concerning several of Wols's artworks.
Letters from correspondents whose names could not be identified are filed at the end. The first folder contains a typed list of names found with the letters and photocopies of labels of original housing. Most letters are letters received. If not indicated the file contains letters sent as well as letters received. Letters sent by Geissler are carbon copies.
Arrangement
Arranged alphabetically by correspondent.

Series V. Offprints and manuscripts, 1886-1992, undated 2.5 linear feet (6 boxes)
This series consists predominantly of offprints from scholarly art magazines, but complete issues and a few small monographic publications are also present. There are four topical groups: Art in Bavaria circa 1600; Art under Emperor Rudolf II of Austria; Mannerism and Drawing; and Artists. The titles are derived from Geissler's original labels in German: Bayerische Kunst um 1660; Rudolfinische Kunst; Weiteres zum Manierismus und zur Zeichenkunst; and Künstler.
Arrangement
Geissler's original grouping by topic is preserved. Within each group offprints from periodicals are listed by title; offprints from books and manuscripts are listed under the name of the author.
