The Special Collections and Institutional Archives departments create finding aids for the Getty Research Institute's archival and visual resource collections and for a few historical records of the J. Paul Getty Trust. A "finding aid" describes the scope and contents of a group of records and provides an inventory of materials within the records.

 Abstract:  The collection comprises twenty-one albumen photographs of Algerians taken by French photographer Félix Moulin during his eighteen-month trip to Algeria from 1856 to 1857. Included are portraits of Algerian chiefs, holy men, scholars, musicians and dancers, fishermen, and water carriers. Also included are a few portraits of French administrators in Algeria.

 Title:  Jacques-Philippe Potteau Portraits of Algerian Soldiers for the Collection anthropologique du Muséum de Paris  
 Dates:  1863 
 Abstract:  The 20 frontal and profile portraits of ten Algerian soldiers who visited Paris in 1863 were taken by Philippe-Jacques Potteau as part of his larger anthropological project for the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle, known as the Collection anthropologique du Muséum de Paris (1855-1869). Seven pairs of photographs are of soldiers from the 3rd Regiment of Algerian Tirailleurs, an infantry corps, and three pairs depict soldiers from the 2nd and 3rd Regiments of Algerian Spahis, or light cavalry units.

 Abstract:  The collection comprises a group of 33 portraits from Jacques-Philippe Potteau's Collection anthropologique du Muséum de Paris. The sitters include soldiers from the Tirailleurs algériens; members of diplomatic staff from French Cochinchina and Annam to Paris; Bohemians; and Swedes. Present are 12 pairs of frontal and profile portraits of individuals; two full-length seated portraits; a full-length standing portrait; and three frontal and two profile unmatched portraits.

 Abstract:  The carte-de-visite album contains 50 cartes-de-visite of Algeria and Algerians by various photographers including Jean Geiser and Alexandre Leroux; a two-part panorama of Algiers by Jean Geiser made from two joined horizontal cabinet cards; and a panoramic view of Oran by A. Decugis showing the port and military hospital, also on a horizontal cabinet card.
