Collection Inventories and Finding Aids

The Special Collections and Institutional Archives departments create finding aids for the Getty Research Institute's archival and visual resource collections and for a few historical records of the J. Paul Getty Trust. A "finding aid" describes the scope and contents of a group of records and provides an inventory of materials within the records.

 Abstract:  The Long Beach Museum of Art (LBMA) was among the first museums in the United States to focus on video as an artistic medium. The materials in the archive document LBMA's innovative approaches to collecting, producing and displaying video art, primarily between 1974 and 1999. Materials include artist files; exhibition records; LBMA's administrative records pertaining to the video program; materials on the museum's grant and cable television programs; photographic materials; and almost 5,000 videotapes.

 Abstract:  The records, created and/or maintained by Program Officer Vicki Rosenberg, concern the grantmaking activities of the Getty Education Institute for the Arts (GEI) from the mid-1980s until 2001. Rosenberg's files thoroughly cover the full range of GEI grant making activites, including detailed files on District, Regional Institute, and Special Initiative grants. Other GEI initiatives are briefly touched upon in her general adminstrative records. Records are comprised of correspondence, grant proposals, review material, reports, and evaluation materials.

 Abstract:  The papers of Anne Willan, a British-American expert in French gastronomy, provide a comprehensive survey of the operations of the École de cuisine La Varenne founded by Willan in Paris in 1975 and of Willan's writings and TV programs. The papers consist of correspondence, brochures, drafts, typescripts, press clippings, photographs, videos, and electronic records. The archive also includes drawings, ephemera, manuscripts and prints collected by Willan and her husband Mark Cherniavsky. Dating from the 16th to the late 20th century, these works illuminate the preparation and consumption of food and its display in England, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and the United States.
