Collection Inventories and Finding Aids

The Special Collections and Institutional Archives departments create finding aids for the Getty Research Institute's archival and visual resource collections and for a few historical records of the J. Paul Getty Trust. A "finding aid" describes the scope and contents of a group of records and provides an inventory of materials within the records.

 Title:  Alexander Liberman miscellaneous papers,

 Abstract:  Alexander Liberman was an artist, photographer, and an influential art director of Vogue magazine from 1943 to 1962, then editorial director of Condé Nast publications until 1994. The collection contains Liberman's drafts, transcripts, mock-ups, sound recordings relating to "Vogue project," The Artist in his Studio and other publications. Also included are nine albums of photographs and clippings from Vogue and various newspaper reviews.

 Abstract:  French critic and poet. The collection consists of Turpin's journals from 1914 to 1952 as well as a set of ca. 240 letters received and critical studies and eulogies. Letters from some 50 correspondents, mostly artists, concern reviews, exhibitions, sales of paintings, and publications, and often contain musings on artistic theory and practice.

 Abstract:  Collection comprises ca. 1600 letters (ca. 1921-ca. 1978) sent to Robert Valançay, the French poet and critic, from artists and writers of the surrealist group. Twelve letters are from Valançay. The collection includes a translation in manuscript by Valançay, 5 manuscripts by others, printed ephemera, and ca. 50 photographs, most presumably taken by Valançay.
