Collection Inventories and Finding Aids

The Special Collections and Institutional Archives departments create finding aids for the Getty Research Institute's archival and visual resource collections and for a few historical records of the J. Paul Getty Trust. A "finding aid" describes the scope and contents of a group of records and provides an inventory of materials within the records.

 Abstract:  The Oleg Grabar papers document the career of the scholar who transformed the field of Islamic art history in the United States. Compiled over more than fifty years, the archive contains thousands of photographs, slides, notes, specialized and hard-to-find research materials, unpublished works including lectures and student theses, historical maps, and ephemera. A small amount of material, especially photographs of Byzantine art and architecture, originally collected by his father, André Grabar, is also included.

 Abstract:  The collection consists of digitized and analog audio recordings, video recordings, and photographs of the people and events related to the Scholars Program at the Getty Research Institute. The materials date 1985-2013 and include recordings and photographs of lectures, panel discussions, conferences, and other events hosted by the Getty Research Institute and given by Getty Scholars, staff, and invited speakers. The collection also includes portraits of the program scholars and photo releases signed by scholars.

 Abstract:  The archive contains photographs by Alexander Liberman, Russian-born photographer, art director of Vogue magazine, and editorial director of Condé Nast publications. Included in the collection are approximately 8,000 photographic prints, 50,000 transparencies, 90,000 negatives, 38 books of contact prints, and prints mounted for exhibition. The predominant subjects are artists and other cultural figures, and European historical sites. Also included are personal photographs of family and friends.

 Abstract:  Yvonne Rainer is an avant-garde American dancer, choreographer, filmmaker and writer. Her papers document her life as an artist from the late 1950s through 2013, and include photographic material dated as early as 1933. Materials include dance scores; programs and posters; photographic and audiovisual documentation of performances, rehearsals, and films; correspondence; writings, including Rainer's feature-length film scripts; and critical response to her work.
