Collection Inventories and Finding Aids

The Special Collections and Institutional Archives departments create finding aids for the Getty Research Institute's archival and visual resource collections and for a few historical records of the J. Paul Getty Trust. A "finding aid" describes the scope and contents of a group of records and provides an inventory of materials within the records.

The collection also includes models and brochures for other projects by the firm, and papers relating to the Peter Lewis guesthouse, a project by the office of Philip Johnson.

 Abstract:  The resource comprises eight unedited videorecordings (with corresponding transcripts) of oral history interviews conducted with prominent Los Angeles architects from 2011 to 2012 as part of the Getty Research Institute's exhibition Overdrive: L.A. Constructs the Future, 1940-1990. The exhibition examined the development of Los Angeles during the postwar years; the interviewees discuss this and related topics.

 Abstract:  The Ada Louise Huxtable papers contain the writing and research of the outspoken architecture critic and ardent advocate of the contemporary preservation movement. Huxtable wrote 11 books and worked as a dedicated architecture critic at the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. This collection is comprised of correspondence, typescripts, photographs, awards and research files spanning her career as a writer and one of the most important voices in the field of architectural criticism during the second half of the twentieth century.

 Abstract:  Materials principally comprise audiovisual recordings of oral history interviews, public conversations, and lectures dating 2003-2011, generated by the Getty Research Institute (GRI) through its Modern Art in Los Angeles initiative. Materials also include supporting documentation for the initiative, including interview transcripts, photographs, and ephemera. The interviews and events were conducted to record leading artists, filmmakers, musicians, curators, and critics as they discuss their contributions to Los Angeles' vibrant postwar (1945-1980) art scene.
