The Special Collections and Institutional Archives departments create finding aids for the Getty Research Institute's archival and visual resource collections and for a few historical records of the J. Paul Getty Trust. A "finding aid" describes the scope and contents of a group of records and provides an inventory of materials within the records.

 Abstract:  Harry Shunk and his partner Janos Kender worked as photographers recording the art world from the 1950s to the 1970s in the United States and Europe. Their extensive photography archive contains iconic images from the post-war era and documents key artists of the time, with candid portraits of artists in their homes and studios, and documentary photographs of exhibitions, exhibition openings and installations, performances, and other events.

 Abstract:  The Allan Kaprow Papers offer comprehensive documentation of an artistic career that spanned the latter half of the 20th century and continues into the 21st. Arranged chronologically so as to demonstrate the artist's passage from student of art and art history to practicing artist, art theorist and art educator, the collection contains drawings, term papers and notebooks from Kaprow's student days, followed by ca. 250 Project Files, comprising the complete extant documentation of Kaprow's Environments, Happenings, and Activities.

It includes original materials relating to performances and publication projects in the form of notes, drawings, performance scripts and manuscripts; correspondence with visual, literary and performing artists, art critics, and other individuals prominent in the international avant-garde; printed ephemera, artists' books, and Fluxus objects by Schneemann and others; lecture notes and other materials pertaining to Schneemann as teacher and lecturer; research files on performance and feminist topics; manuscripts by others about Schneemann's work; and photograph albums which provide visual documentation of much of her performance work.
