The Special Collections and Institutional Archives departments create finding aids for the Getty Research Institute's archival and visual resource collections and for a few historical records of the J. Paul Getty Trust. A "finding aid" describes the scope and contents of a group of records and provides an inventory of materials within the records.

 Abstract:  Harry Shunk and his partner Janos Kender worked as photographers recording the art world from the 1950s to the 1970s in the United States and Europe. Their extensive photography archive contains iconic images from the post-war era and documents key artists of the time, with candid portraits of artists in their homes and studios, and documentary photographs of exhibitions, exhibition openings and installations, performances, and other events.

 Abstract:  Comprising over 9,100 items, the majority of which are card stereographs (mounted photographic prints), the Israel Stollman collection of stereographs focuses on views of cities and urban areas, especially in the United States. As such the collection is not only a significant resource on the development of modern urban sites, but it also encapsulates the history of the production of stereographs, which flourished from the 1850s through the 1930s. The collection also contains a small number of transparencies and images printed on glass in the form of stereographs and lantern slides, a collection of stereo viewers, and small amount of related ephemera.

 Abstract:  The papers of photographer Charles Brittin contain photographs, negatives, slides, and transparencies documenting the Los Angeles art scene and social and political movements that occurred during the 1950s-1970s. Accompanying the photographs are correspondence, personal writings, printed ephemera, posters, maquettes, clippings, and publications. The archive also includes works of art by Brittin and other artists such as Bob Alexander, Wallace Berman, and George Herms.
