Collection Inventories and Finding Aids

The Special Collections and Institutional Archives departments create finding aids for the Getty Research Institute's archival and visual resource collections and for a few historical records of the J. Paul Getty Trust. A "finding aid" describes the scope and contents of a group of records and provides an inventory of materials within the records.

 Abstract:  British-born architectural historian and critic, educator, and editor, 1922-1988. The collection contains draft manuscripts, printed material and research notes for eight of Banham's published books, for unpublished projects, and many articles and reviews related to the history of architecture and design. Included are the notes and manuscripts for his public lectures and his teaching. Other files document his participation on design juries and his consultation work.

 Abstract:  Research archive of the art historian Walter William Horn (1908-1995) comprises manuscripts, field notes, drawings, correspondence, publications, blueprints, photographs, slides, and negatives compiled during Horn’s research of medieval timber-framed vernacular structures such as barns, halls, churches, and hospitals in England, France, and the Lowlands. Horn used much of this material in works written with his frequent collaborator, the architect Ernest Born.

 Abstract:  A collection of modern photographs of Greek and Roman vases assembled by the Getty Research Institute. Photographs of Attic black- and red-figured vases attributed to particular vase-painters by J. D. Beazley comprise the largest component of the collection. Coverage of South Italian red-figured vases is also significant. Coverage of other ancient vase-painting styles (including Corinthian, Lakonian, Etruscan, Boeotian, and East Greek examples) is less complete.

 Abstract:  A collection of modern photographs of ancient sites and monuments assembled by the Getty Resarch Institute, concentrating on Greek and Roman architecture from the Greek Archaic through the late Roman Empire (6th century BC-6th century AD). Coverage is most complete for sites and monuments located in Greece and Italy, but the collection also includes photos of sites located in other countries, including Albania, Algeria, Egypt, England, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, and Yugoslavia.
