Collection Inventories and Finding Aids

The Special Collections and Institutional Archives departments create finding aids for the Getty Research Institute's archival and visual resource collections and for a few historical records of the J. Paul Getty Trust. A "finding aid" describes the scope and contents of a group of records and provides an inventory of materials within the records.

Photographs of Attic black- and red-figured vases attributed to particular vase-painters by J. D. Beazley comprise the largest component of the collection. Coverage of South Italian red-figured vases is also significant. Coverage of other ancient vase-painting styles (including Corinthian, Lakonian, Etruscan, Boeotian, and East Greek examples) is less complete.

Coverage is most complete for sites and monuments located in Greece and Italy, but the collection also includes photos of sites located in other countries, including Albania, Algeria, Egypt, England, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, and Yugoslavia.
