Collection Inventories and Finding Aids

The Special Collections and Institutional Archives departments create finding aids for the Getty Research Institute's archival and visual resource collections and for a few historical records of the J. Paul Getty Trust. A "finding aid" describes the scope and contents of a group of records and provides an inventory of materials within the records.

 Abstract:  An assembled collection of visual and written documentation, including correspondence and artists' statements, and photographs and drawings relating to gallery installations, sculptural pieces, conceptual pieces, land art, and performances. Includes artists' letters to German critic and editor Werner Lippert and Galleria Toselli in Milan, and materials pertaining to the exhibition Prospect 69 (Dusseldorf, 1969). Includes letters from artists and gallery owners to Konrad Fischer, and some Fluxus printed ephemera.

 Abstract:  Collection documents the Italian businessman's activities in collecting works by some of the seminal American artists involved with abstract expressionist, pop, minimal, conceptual, environmental, and light and space art. The archive contains material dating from 1956, when Panza began collecting. up to the sale of the second part of his collection to the Guggenheim Museum in 1990. Panza's art collection is documented by correspondence with artists and galleries, photographs, small drawings, invoices, loan requests, announcements, and invitations. The archive also includes a substantial quantity of Panza's writings on art; papers and ephemera related to Panza's associations with museums, galleries, and cultural institutions; clippings and photocopies of articles about the collection; and an extensive group of architectural drawings of potential sites for the collection, many with Panza's installation designs.

 Abstract:  The materials consist of audio recordings, video recordings, images, planning materials and ephemera that document public events sponsored by the Getty Research Institute from 1998 to 2020. The materials include audiocassettes and born-digital files. The events include lectures, discussions, film and video screenings, and collaborative symposia with other arts institutions. The events focus on topics related to art history, performance art, provenance, digital humanities, architecture and the contemporary arts.
