Collection Inventories and Finding Aids

The Special Collections and Institutional Archives departments create finding aids for the Getty Research Institute's archival and visual resource collections and for a few historical records of the J. Paul Getty Trust. A "finding aid" describes the scope and contents of a group of records and provides an inventory of materials within the records.

 Abstract:  Assembled by Michael Simon during his research on Hungarian photography, this extensive collection of photographs documents the development of the medium with a range of photographic processes and the history of the art form in Hungary. Through photography the collection also documents Hungary's tumultuous history over the course of almost 150 years.

 Abstract:  The papers of noted Welsh-born feminist painter Sylvia Sleigh (1916-2010) document her life, career, and the larger context of contemporary feminist art, with the bulk of the collection dating from 1940-2000. Sleigh, a realist painter, moved to the United States in 1961 with her husband, art critic Lawrence Alloway. Sleigh's paintings of nude males in traditional odalisque poses remain her best-known works. She was a central figure in the New York City area feminist art movement of the 1970s.
