Collection Inventories and Finding Aids

The Special Collections and Institutional Archives departments create finding aids for the Getty Research Institute's archival and visual resource collections and for a few historical records of the J. Paul Getty Trust. A "finding aid" describes the scope and contents of a group of records and provides an inventory of materials within the records.

 Dates:  1974-2010 
 Abstract:  The archive is comprised of Edward Ruscha's ongoing photographic documentation of Los Angeles thoroughfares. Included are shoots of three streets made in the 1970s: Santa Monica Boulevard and Pacific Coast Highway, 1974; and Melrose Avenue, 1975; and over 40 shoots made since 2007. These shoots represent more than twenty-five streets including Sepulveda, Pico, Olympic, Wilshire, La Cienega, and Beverly boulevards.

 Abstract:  The archive is comprised of material related to Ed Ruscha's photographic documentation of two major Los Angeles thoroughfares: Sunset Boulevard and Hollywood Boulevard, as well as the projects that resulted from the documentation of the two streets. Ruscha documented Sunset Boulevard in twelve shoots between 1965 and 2001, and Hollywood Boulevard in four shoots between 1973 and 2004. Finished projects include his fourth photographic art book, Every Building on the Sunset Strip, 1966; the portfolio Sunset Strip 1965/1995, and the portfolio and book Then & Now: Hollywood Boulevard 1973-2004, 2005.

 Abstract:  The papers of art collector and dealer Betty Asher document the Los Angeles art scene from circa 1960 to 1990, though most comprehensively in the 1970s, through photographs, artist files, and more than three hundred posters. Correspondence, photographs and other documents provide information about Asher's family history and the process by which she built her art collection. Included in the papers are her collections of postcards and other ephemera.

 Abstract:  The collection contains a near complete archive of Jerry McMillan's artistic output including approximately 7,000 negatives, 150 contact sheets, and 375 prints, as well as magazine articles, exhibition announcements, and other ephemera. There is also a small selection of McMillan's mixed media artworks, including two of McMillan's photo-bag sculptures and a multimedia collage.

 Abstract:  The collection consists of interviews with leading Southern California artists conducted by Betty Turnbull, in preparation for her 1976 exhibition The Last Time I Saw Ferus, which documented the circle of artists and art figures surrounding the Ferus Gallery.  Abstract:  Maurice Tuchman (Jacksonville, Florida, 1936) is one of the most important curators to have emerged from Los Angeles, and his papers form a significant resource for the study of Southern California art history from the early 1960s to the 1990s. The archive documents many of Tuchman's projects both at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), where he served as curator from 1964 to 1994, an those done outside the institution as a scholar and art consultant. His professional files include most notably his appointment books from 1965 to 1994, and the photographs he took during the installation of Art and Technology (1971). A large section of personal correspondence, photographs and miscellaneous papers is also present, together with some audiovisual materials.

Materials also include supporting documentation for the initiative, including interview transcripts, photographs, and ephemera. The interviews and events were conducted to record leading artists, filmmakers, musicians, curators, and critics as they discuss their contributions to Los Angeles' vibrant postwar (1945-1980) art scene.
