The Special Collections and Institutional Archives departments create finding aids for the Getty Research Institute's archival and visual resource collections and for a few historical records of the J. Paul Getty Trust. A "finding aid" describes the scope and contents of a group of records and provides an inventory of materials within the records.

 Abstract:  The collection of 19 photographs taken by Charles Georges Spitz and Sophia Hoare depicts people and events as well as everyday life in Tahiti during the last three decades of the 19th century. Included are portraits of the Tahitian royal family; photographs depicting the funeral of Pōmare V; and a group portrait of M. Chessé and the chiefs of Tahiti and Mo'orea, taken at the time of France's annexation of Tahiti in 1880.

Although there are a few bird's-eye views of Tehran and some images of Qajar buildings, the photographs primarily depict buildings in ruins or disrepair located near towns and villages or in isolated settings.  Abstract:  The album of 110 photographs taken by Fotocelere Coloniale between approximately 1935 and 1942 documents the roads built between Asmara, the newly-designated capitol of the Italian colony of Eritrea, and the country's other major cities as part of the infrastructure built by the fascist regime to bolster the growth of the manufacture of commodities such as buttons, cooking oil, pasta, construction materials, meat, tobacco, hide, and other household goods. Also included are 20 loose snapshots taken by an amateur photographer traveling in the region.

 Abstract:  The album contains 74 photographs taken during the two-month sojourn French photographer Paul Nadar made in Turkistan (present-day Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan) when he was invited to exhibit at the 1890 Tashkent Exhibition. Nadar's images capture everyday scenes and people in the streets and environs of Samargand, Tashkent, Bukhoro, Mary (near the ancient site of Merv), and the Murghab steppe. Included are photographs depicting people and activities in and around bazaars and mosques, camel caravans, and local methods of transportation. Several scenes show a falconry contest and a baigue, a strategic horse race run over rugged terrain.

 Abstract:  The collection comprises 18 salted paper photographs by pioneer Uzbek photographer and filmmaker, Khudaibergen Divanov. Fifteen of the images are photographs Divanov made prior to the fall of the Khanate of Khiva, and depict the city of Khiva, the capitol of the Khanate of Khiva in western Central Asia, and its inhabitants. The remaining three photographs were taken after the fall of the Khanate of Khiva in 1920.

 Abstract:  The 20 frontal and profile portraits of ten Algerian soldiers who visited Paris in 1863 were taken by Philippe-Jacques Potteau as part of his larger anthropological project for the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle, known as the Collection anthropologique du Muséum de Paris (1855-1869). Seven pairs of photographs are of soldiers from the 3rd Regiment of Algerian Tirailleurs, an infantry corps, and three pairs depict soldiers from the 2nd and 3rd Regiments of Algerian Spahis, or light cavalry units.

 Abstract:  The collection of 47 photographs contains views of the city of Beirut, Lebanon and the ruins of the ancient city of Palmyra and the town of Al-Rastan in Syria, taken by Louis Vignes in 1864 when he accompanied Honoré Théodoric d'Albert, duc de Luynes, on his expedition to the Dead Sea region. They represent the earliest photographs of the remains of Roman Palmyra and are also among the earliest photographs of Beirut.

 Title:  G. Prat photograph album of China and Japan  
 Dates:  1874-1900 
 Abstract:  The album, compiled by G. Prat, a French silk inspector working in China in the latter part of the nineteenth century, contains 151 albumen photographs of China and Japan. The album's visual focus is on the ports and trading centers of China's Pearl River Delta. Present are 98 views of Guangzhou (Canton); six of Hong Kong; and 11 of Macau. Additionally, there are 16 images on eight pages depicting the Canton Amateur Theatrical Society's (CATS) productions, and 20 photographs of Japan, 19 of which are hand colored. Photographers include Lai Fong and Kusakabe Kinbē. Extensive commentary written on the mount borders forms Prat's compendium on China in which he addresses any number of topics from history, geography, climate, agriculture, religion, language and dialects, and business practices to family life, sedan chairs, etiquette, costume and dress, and opium, to a lexicon of colonial Asian terms. The album is accompanied by 21 loose albumen prints and a manuscript listing photographs to be acquired.

 Abstract:  An album of 154 collodion and gelatin silver photographs compiled by an unidentified German sailor from photographs collected during his tour of duty aboard the German gunboat Iltis. The focus of the album is the German naval presence in China, documenting the Iltis and its crew in particular, but also including views of other German and foreign naval vessels. It also presents a picture of Chinese culture during the last days of the Qing dynasty, the revolution of 1911, and the birth of the Chinese Republic, and documents both domestic struggle and foreign intervention as well as scenes of daily life.

 Abstract:  The papers of Clara Diament Sujo provide a comprehensive survey of the operations of CDS Gallery founded by the dealer and art critic in New York in 1981. There is also documentation on the center of contemporary art Estudio Actual created by Sujo in Caracas in 1968, as well as on her formative years studying with Jorge Romero Brest in Buenos Aires, and her writings and lectures. The archive comprises correspondence; financial records; scrapbooks; exhibition brochures; artist files; photographs; videos; and works on paper dedicated to Sujo. Among the artists represented by CDS Gallery and in the records are: Roberto Aizenberg; Jacobo Borges; Carlos Cruz-Diez; José Luis Cuevas; Stephen De Staebler; Wilfredo Lam; Roberto Matta; Henry Moore; José Clemente Orozco; Armando Reverón; Jesús Rafael Soto; Hedda Sterne; Joaquín Torres-García; and Adja Yunkers.
