The Special Collections and Institutional Archives departments create finding aids for the Getty Research Institute's archival and visual resource collections and for a few historical records of the J. Paul Getty Trust. A "finding aid" describes the scope and contents of a group of records and provides an inventory of materials within the records.

 Abstract:  The John Lautner papers contain the comprehensive archive of this Southern California architect who became famous for such innovative structures as Chemosphere (the Malin House) and Silvertop (the Reiner House). Comprised of about 10,000 drawings, photographs and slides, and 17 models, plus Lautner's office and correspondence files, the archive is an important resource for the study of Southern California modernism in all its diverse aspects. The drawings detailing the structural engineering that enabled Lautner to create his sculpturally innovative houses will be of particular interest to historians of architecture and science.

 Abstract:  The Lawrence Gustave Desmond papers represent over 30 years of exhaustive research and writing by Lawrence Desmond on the lives and work of Mesoamerican archaeologists Augustus and Alice Dixon Le Plongeon, who lived and traveled throughout Yucatán, Mexico, and Central America from 1873 to 1886, and were the first to systematically excavate and photograph the Maya sites of Chichén Itzá and Uxmal. Desmond's interest in the husband and wife team began during his graduate studies and they are the subject of his PhD dissertation and two books, A Dream of Maya: Augustus and Alice Le Plongeon in Nineteenth-century Yucatán with Phyllis Messenger (1988) and Yucatán through Her Eyes: Alice Dixon Le Plongeon, Writer & Expeditionary Photographer (2009). Included in the collection are research materials and correspondence assembled by Desmond over the course of his study of the Le Plongeons along with the drafts and manuscripts for his resulting publications. Inventories of the major holdings of original Le Plongeon photographs in the United States, and of the Dixon family in England, as well as copy photographs of those holdings, are also included.

The collection also contains the original manuscript musical scores for both the Curtis Picture Musicale and In the Land of the Headhunters.  Abstract:  American photographer and author Lewis Baltz first gained recognition as one of the key figures in the New Topographic Movement of the late 1970s, pioneering an approach to photography that refused to glorify industrial process, revealing instead landscapes blighted by rapid development and human detritus. The collection encompasses Baltz's career spanning from his early black-and-white Prototype Works of the late 1960s to his color projects of the early twenty-first century up to and including Aqua Alta and It's a Wonderful Life (2002). Included are original materials - negatives with printing notes, contact sheets, outtakes for images not selected as part of a final project, proof prints, and duplicate final prints - as well as installation shots, exhibition ephemera, and publications by and about Baltz.

 Abstract:  Barbara Turner Smith (American, born 1931) is one of the most influential figures in the history of performance and feminist art in Southern California. Her work – which has taken the varied forms of painting, drawing, installation, video, performance, and artists' books, and often involves her own body – explores concepts that strike at the core of human nature, including male and female sexuality, physical and spiritual sustenance, ecology, technology, and death. The archive, which offers an exceptionally rich resource for Smith's highly personal artistic practice, contains 160 diaries, 54 sketchbooks, hundreds of drawings, more than 850 vintage prints, thousands of negatives and contact sheets, approximately 90 films and 1100 audio and video tapes, in addition to all the notes, plans, and archival records related to her artistic projects from her student days forward. The archive encompasses not only Smith's career as an artist, but also her work as a writer, teacher, and advocate of the arts in Los Angeles.

 Abstract:  An American paintings conservator trained in Berlin, William Suhr worked under Wilhelm Reinhold Valentiner at the Detroit Institute of Arts beginning in 1927, and was the conservator of the Frick Collection from 1935 to 1977. He also maintained private clients including individuals and major American museums in Cleveland, New York, Detroit, San Francisco, Chicago, and St. Louis. After World War II he worked closely with clients active in the New York art market, particularly the dealer Rosenberg and Stiebel. The bulk of the collection is comprised of photographs of paintings treated by Suhr, along with his treatment notes. The collection also contains business papers, including correspondence, articles about Suhr, personal papers, and documentation of Suhr's own artwork.
