The Special Collections and Institutional Archives departments create finding aids for the Getty Research Institute's archival and visual resource collections and for a few historical records of the J. Paul Getty Trust. A "finding aid" describes the scope and contents of a group of records and provides an inventory of materials within the records.

 Dates:  1974-2010 
 Abstract:  The archive is comprised of Edward Ruscha's ongoing photographic documentation of Los Angeles thoroughfares. Included are shoots of three streets made in the 1970s: Santa Monica Boulevard and Pacific Coast Highway, 1974; and Melrose Avenue, 1975; and over 40 shoots made since 2007. These shoots represent more than twenty-five streets including Sepulveda, Pico, Olympic, Wilshire, La Cienega, and Beverly boulevards.

 Dates:  1965-2010 
 Abstract:  The archive is comprised of material related to Ed Ruscha's photographic documentation of two major Los Angeles thoroughfares: Sunset Boulevard and Hollywood Boulevard, as well as the projects that resulted from the documentation of the two streets. Ruscha documented Sunset Boulevard in twelve shoots between 1965 and 2001, and Hollywood Boulevard in four shoots between 1973 and 2004. Finished projects include his fourth photographic art book, Every Building on the Sunset Strip, 1966; the portfolio Sunset Strip 1965/1995, and the portfolio and book Then & Now: Hollywood Boulevard 1973-2004, 2005.

 Dates:  1947-1998 (bulk 1947-1957) 
 Abstract:  Consisting primarily of photographic materials created by Leonard Nadel from 1947 to 1957, the archive records early efforts by the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA) to create public housing for the city's growing population, and also documents several areas of the city that the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) had targeted for commercial revitalization. Nadel's black-and-white negatives, contact prints, and two unpublished photographic books form the bulk of the material, supplemented by handwritten notes and related documents.

 Abstract:  The collection of photographs of the Los Angeles art scene in the late 1960s and early 1970s by photographer Malcolm Lubliner records the activities of artists such as Claes Oldenburg, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, Josef Albers, John Altoon, Frank Stella, and Sam Francis. Most of the photographs were commissioned by Gemini G.E.L., and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's Art and Technology (A&T) Program. Included in the collection are approximately 460 sleeves of negatives, 600 corresponding contact prints, and 300 photographic prints, including duplicates.

 Abstract:  The collection of over 140 photographic prints and 1200 negatives represents a portion of the professional and personal output of Harry Drinkwater, a Venice, California-based Black photographer who documented Los Angeles's mid-century modern design movement as well as its wider artistic and social circles. Los Angeles-based Black artists, architects, and designers and their works feature prominently in the collection.
