Collection Inventories and Finding Aids

The Special Collections and Institutional Archives departments create finding aids for the Getty Research Institute's archival and visual resource collections and for a few historical records of the J. Paul Getty Trust. A "finding aid" describes the scope and contents of a group of records and provides an inventory of materials within the records.

 Title:  Everett Ellin papers
 Dates:  1928-2013
Abstract:  Everett Ellin was the polymathic owner of two well-regarded art galleries in Los Angeles during the late 1950s and the early 1960s. He invigorated the local art scene by bringing major artists from New York to Los Angeles. He also created a vital link between technology and museums by founding the Museum Computer Network. After leaving the art world, he worked as an entrepreneur in energy management and medical imaging technology, as an inventor of media devices, an executive for SONY, and as a business consultant. The papers document Ellin's professional life, including his work with the Everett Ellin Gallery, French & Company, and the Museum Computer Network. A small quantity of personal papers is also present.

 Dates:  1880-2003

The gallery initially exhibited works by modern and local artists, but transitioned in 1935 to dealing mostly in pre-Hispanic art. Stendahl Art Galleries sold pre-Hispanic works to a variety of collectors, dealers, and institutions, and is considered a significant gallery in the history of that market. The records comprise subject files; photographic files; exhibition files; documents related to publications; financial records; administrative files; correspondence; and Stendahl family papers including research files for the book Exhibitionist: Earl Stendahl Art Dealer as Impresario.

 Title:  Margo Leavin Gallery records
 Dates:  1947-2017, bulk 1966-2013
Abstract:  In nearly forty-two years of operation as one of the foremost art venues in Los Angeles (1970 -2012), Margo Leavin Gallery presented over five hundred exhibitions. Grounded in Minimalism and Pop Art, the gallery showed a mix of works by both New York and Los Angeles artists such as Dan Flavin and Claes Oldenburg, and gradually moved into the terrain of Conceptual Art, representing artists such as Alexis Smith, John Baldessari, and Sherrie Levine. In 1976 Wendy Brandow joined the gallery staff, and became Director and Partner in 1989. Brandow played a key role in the gallery: she was active in all aspects of the enterprise, from conceptualizing and organizing exhibition to managing business affairs, and was instrumental in engaging with a younger, conceptually oriented generation of artists such as Larry Johnson, Stephen Prina, Christopher Williams, and Roy Dowell. Leavin and Brandow placed numerous works at the world's top museums, had a profound effect on the art world of the city, and made an indisputable contribution to the international acclaim accorded to Los Angeles Conceptual Art.
