The Special Collections and Institutional Archives departments create finding aids for the Getty Research Institute's archival and visual resource collections and for a few historical records of the J. Paul Getty Trust. A "finding aid" describes the scope and contents of a group of records and provides an inventory of materials within the records.

 Abstract:  This collection contains thorough photographic documentation by Max Hutzel of art and architecture in Italy ranging in date from Antiquity to late Baroque. Included are photographs of secular buildings, museum holdings, ancient ruins, and religious institutions covering a broad range of artistic forms and styles, including architecture, paintings, frescoes, sculpture, manuscripts, metalwork and other minor arts. The regions most heavily represented are: the Abruzzi, Lazio (including Rome), the Marches, and Umbria.

 Abstract:  Assembled over a forty-year period by photography curator Joseph Armstrong Baird, Jr. the collection contains approximately 1663 photographs of architecture and urban views primarily in Europe, but also including Asia, the Middle East, and Mexico and Hawaii in North America. Most of the photographs date from the late nineteenth-century, although a few are early twentieth-century prints.
