Collection Inventories and Finding Aids

The Special Collections and Institutional Archives departments create finding aids for the Getty Research Institute's archival and visual resource collections and for a few historical records of the J. Paul Getty Trust. A "finding aid" describes the scope and contents of a group of records and provides an inventory of materials within the records.

 Abstract:  This group of 22 albumen prints of China includes nine images from Shanghai, four from Hankou, three from Tianjin, two from Guangzhou, two from Hong Kong, and one each from Anting, Ningbo, Xiamen, Beijing, and Nanjing. Included are photographs made by British military personnel and other European photographers, as well as Chinese photographers and studios. Photographers include Paul Champion, St. Julian Hugh Edwards, Lai Fong, Liang Shitai, Kung Tai, Pow Kee Studio, and Major James Crombie Watson.

 Title:  Views from the Iltis in China

 Abstract:  An album of 154 collodion and gelatin silver photographs compiled by an unidentified German sailor from photographs collected during his tour of duty aboard the German gunboat Iltis. The focus of the album is the German naval presence in China, documenting the Iltis and its crew in particular, but also including views of other German and foreign naval vessels. It also presents a picture of Chinese culture during the last days of the Qing dynasty, the revolution of 1911, and the birth of the Chinese Republic, and documents both domestic struggle and foreign intervention as well as scenes of daily life.

 Abstract:  The collection comprises views of structures and sculptures in Sri Lanka from the sites of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa. The twelve photographs of Anuradhapura are by Charles Thomas Scowen. The photographs of Polonnaruwa were likely all taken by Joseph Lawton. The photographs were taken shortly after the rediscovery of these important Buddhist monuments, but before official excavations were begun by the Archaeological Department of Ceylon in the 1890s.

 Abstract:  The album, compiled by an unidentified colonial agent who was in the Belgian Congo from 1908 to 1909, documents one man's experiences in the region during the first year of the newly-annexed Belgian colony's existence. The album records the agent's journey from Antwerp to Matadi and thence up the Congo river to his post at Yoboila (Lomami). The remainder of the album documents the agent's daily life, local inhabitants and surroundings.

 Abstract:  Papers and artwork from VKhUTEMAS (Higher Artistic-Technical Workshops), a state-sponsored school of design established in Moscow. The materials span virtually the entire existence of VKhUTEMAS, from its founding in 1920 until 1929, a year before it closed. The name of the school was changed to VKhuTEIN (Higher State Artistic and Technical Institute) in 1927. Papers comprise student records, evaluations, and photographs, as well as brochures, administrative records, and school newspapers that document VKhUTEMAS's innovative curricula. The bulk of the collection contains drawings, paintings, photographs, experimental books and other work created by students and professors.

 Abstract:  Vlastislav Hofman (1884-1964), architect, painter, and set and costume designer, was a leading member of the Czech modernist movement, and is perhaps best known for his work in the theater. In a career which spanned approximately forty years he designed sets for nearly 300 productions and worked with many leading Czech dramaturges. The Vlastislav Hofman papers and drawings contains material from several stages in Hofman's career, and include an extensive collection of letters and postcards from prominent figures in the Czech avant-garde movement; business correspondence regarding exhibitions and conferences; several volumes of photographs of set designs, costume designs, and production designs; architectural sketches; and several original drawings of projects in the decorative arts representative of an early period in his career.
