Collection Inventories and Finding Aids

The Special Collections and Institutional Archives departments create finding aids for the Getty Research Institute's archival and visual resource collections and for a few historical records of the J. Paul Getty Trust. A "finding aid" describes the scope and contents of a group of records and provides an inventory of materials within the records.

 Abstract:  The Thing is a quarterly periodical in the form of an object. Each year, four artists, writers, musicians or filmmakers are invited by the editors (Jonn Herschend and Will Rogan) to create an everyday object that somehow incorporates text. This object will be reproduced and hand wrapped at a wrapping party and then mailed to the homes of the subscribers with the help of the United States Postal Service.

 Abstract:  The Tom Mahoney Research Materials on Pancho Villa and the Mexican Revolution comprises materials related to an unpublished book by Mahoney with the working title "P-a-n-c-h-o V-i-l-l-a: Bandit...Rebel...Patriot...Satyr," which he began working on in the late 1920s. Included is a partial typescript for the book and a paste-up of photographic illustrations. Research materials include hand- or type-written notes and transcriptions; extensive files of clippings from revolution-era and post-revolution Mexican and American newspapers; related manuscripts and publications and research-related correspondence. Also included are research files on topics of interest to Mahoney, many of which relate to his book and magazine publications, such as The Great Merchants and The Story of Jewelry.

 Abstract:  The Tomb of Nefertari project records date from 1984 to 1996, 2005, and undated and consist of files from the Getty Conservation Institute's (GCI) collaboration with the Egyptian Antiquities Organization (EAO), renamed the Supreme Council of Antiquities in 1994, to conserve the wall paintings in the tomb of Nefertari in the Valley of the Queens, in Luxor, Egypt. Records document project planning, condition assessments, scientific analyses, conservation treatment, environmental monitoring, graphic documentation, site protection planning, and conservation training. The collection also contains press clippings and files relating to the GCI's efforts to disseminate information about the project through publications, videos, exhibitions, public presentations, press conferences, and press releases. There is also an internal GCI report evaluating the project in 2005.

 Abstract:  The handwritten and typed manuscripts by Tristan Tzara from the collection of René Gaffé are gathered in a volume whose binding was designed by Paul Bonet. The manuscripts consist of drafts of writings from Le cinéma calendrier du cœur abstrait, maison, La deuxième aventure céleste de monsieur Antipyrine, De nos oiseaux, Faites vos jeux and poems from L'antitête. Tipped into the volume are also a card from Tzara to Paul Éluard and a notebook containing pen-and-ink drawings.
