The Special Collections and Institutional Archives departments create finding aids for the Getty Research Institute's archival and visual resource collections and for a few historical records of the J. Paul Getty Trust. A "finding aid" describes the scope and contents of a group of records and provides an inventory of materials within the records.

 Abstract:  Collection comprises ca. 1600 letters (ca. 1921-ca. 1978) sent to Robert Valançay, the French poet and critic, from artists and writers of the surrealist group. Twelve letters are from Valançay. The collection includes a translation in manuscript by Valançay, 5 manuscripts by others, printed ephemera, and ca. 50 photographs, most presumably taken by Valançay.

 Abstract:  The Francisco Valença papers contain the work of the acclaimed Portuguese caricaturist who was most active between 1905 and 1958. Contents of the collection include letters received, unpublished manuscripts, original caricatures and comics, drawings and studies, printed matter and personal documents of Valença. Correspondence comprises letters from Portuguese intellectuals, politicians and modernist artist's groups. Manuscripts include a bibliography, records of artwork and writings on other artists. His artwork consists mostly of original pen and ink caricatures.

Vander Poel Campanian collection is an archive devoted to the historiography of archaeological investigations conducted around the Bay of Naples, with particular emphasis on Pompeii. Comprised of manuscripts, photographs, maps, plans, drawings and the papers of Matteo Della Corte and Tatiana Warscher, it is a comprehensive resource for researching the excavations at Pompeii and the surrounding area.

 Abstract:  Ten lithographed hand-colored maps of Vienna published (and possibly drawn) by Austrian cartographer Carl Graf Vasquez. One print shows the city and neighboring districts in the medieval era (1147); the remaining prints show the city in the years prior to modernization efforts in the mid-19th century. The border of each map contains 14 views of Viennese monuments.

 Abstract:  The collection of 47 photographs contains views of the city of Beirut, Lebanon and the ruins of the ancient city of Palmyra and the town of Al-Rastan in Syria, taken by Louis Vignes in 1864 when he accompanied Honoré Théodoric d'Albert, duc de Luynes, on his expedition to the Dead Sea region. They represent the earliest photographs of the remains of Roman Palmyra and are also among the earliest photographs of Beirut.

 Abstract:  Collection comprising 103 letters sent to James Vizetelly and his company of printers and engravers by ca. 40 correspondents between 1838 and 1854. Most of the letters are in French, from French editors, and printers, and prominent publishers, including Béthune et Plon, Pagnerre Éditeur, Melchior Yvan, and L. Curmer. They reflect Vizetelly & Co.'s involvement in the growing demand for illustrated French and "exotic" literature.

 Abstract:  Papers and artwork from VKhUTEMAS (Higher Artistic-Technical Workshops), a state-sponsored school of design established in Moscow. The materials span virtually the entire existence of VKhUTEMAS, from its founding in 1920 until 1929, a year before it closed. The name of the school was changed to VKhuTEIN (Higher State Artistic and Technical Institute) in 1927. Papers comprise student records, evaluations, and photographs, as well as brochures, administrative records, and school newspapers that document VKhUTEMAS's innovative curricula. The bulk of the collection contains drawings, paintings, photographs, experimental books and other work created by students and professors.
