Collection Inventories and Finding Aids

The Special Collections and Institutional Archives departments create finding aids for the Getty Research Institute's archival and visual resource collections and for a few historical records of the J. Paul Getty Trust. A "finding aid" describes the scope and contents of a group of records and provides an inventory of materials within the records.

 Abstract:  The papers of Gabrielle Kopelman document her numerous projects as a New York-based independent conservator for various institutions such as The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and The Toledo Museum of Art, as well as art dealers including P. & D. Colnaghi & Company and Wildenstein & Company. The archive includes restoration projects of paintings by major artists such as Rembrandt, Peter Paul Rubens and Hendrik Terbrugghen. The bulk of the collection contains photographic documentation of paintings in the form of black-and-white prints, negatives, radiographs and color transparencies. Also included are related papers including correspondence, invoices, notes and clippings.

 Abstract:  Photographs and related research material documenting Romanesque sculpture and architecture in southern France and northern Spain comprise this collection. Frances Terpak photographed the majority of the images and compiled the other materials in the course of research for her dissertation, "The Romanesque Architecture and Sculpture of Saint Caprais in Agen" (Yale University, 1982), and for subsequent scholarly articles. Over 150 rolls of 35mm negatives shot by Terpak and over 2000 images printed from these negatives form the bulk of the collection. Also included are a small number of photographs acquired from institutional and commercial sources, including Bildarchiv Foto Marburg, Guntram Koch, Photo Zodiaque and Archivo Moreno. Related research materials, such as notes, keyed architectural plans, and shot lists, complement the photographs.
